The calendar has now flipped to August, and parents hoping to prepare their children for back-to-school can do so during an upcoming sales tax holiday.
Under provisions of the state of Illinois’ 2026-27 fiscal year budget, a sales tax holiday will be available on school supplies beginning next week, and parents and loved ones will have up to 10 days to take advantage of it.
Here is when the program will take place, how it will work, and some of the items that are covered by the holiday.
When does the back-to-school sales tax holiday begin?
According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, the sales tax holiday will get underway on Friday, August 7.
That holiday will run through Sunday, August 16, according to officials.
How does the program work?
According to provisions of the sales tax holiday, consumers will be able to purchase specific clothing and school-related items during that 10-day period, and will pay a reduced sales tax rate.
That reduced rate drops the state’s portion of the sales tax from 6.25% to 1.25%, according to officials.
That reduction does not impact locally collected sales taxes, officials caution.
What are some of the items that are included in the sales tax holiday?
Under provisions of the state law, most school supplies like rulers, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons and other items will qualify.
What’s more, specific clothing and footwear will also qualify, assuming that those items retail for $125 or less, according to officials.
Some apparel, including for sports and other activities, and some clothing items that retail for more than $125 are not eligible.
