The season 4 finale of The Big Bang Theory features one of the most controversial storylines in the CBS show’s 12-season run.
In the Big Bang Theory episode, which aired in May 2011, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) stumbled out of his bedroom, disheveled, suggesting that they had been intimate. One of the comedy’s showrunners, Steve Molaro, revealed that he, like many fans, took issue with Raj and Penny’s unexpected storyline during a recent appearance on The Big Bang Theory Podcast. According to Molaro, the scene wasn’t in the original script. He theorized that the moment was added as an enticing cliffhanger.
“It felt to me just a little bit like maybe this was a gratuitous ending to get a rise out of the viewers at the expense of who these characters are at this point in the series. And, ‘Well, this is exciting.’ Let’s shake it up and do this and see what happens. And at the time, I was not terribly comfortable with that,” said Molaro during the September 2026 podcast interview.
Molaro said that he did voice his discomfort about the storyline, which he felt was out of character for Raj and Penny. As fans are aware, Penny’s main love interest on the show was Raj’s close friend and colleague, Leonard (Johnny Galecki).
“I probably said something along the lines of, ‘I don’t feel great about this. Can we think about this? Can we talk about this before we commit to this? This is a big move. This is going to be messy or whatever,”” said Molaro.
Molaro then said his concern had encouraged the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, to go forward with the plot.
“It seemed that the more I voiced my concern, I think Chuck took that understandably, took that as a sign. ‘Well, if you’re having this many feelings, so will the audience. Great.’ Whether those feelings were good or not, you know, better than them being bored. This is a sign that feelings will be had. So maybe that’s a good sign, even though I was like, ‘No, let’s not let’s take five minutes and think about what else could happen here,'” said Molaro during the podcast interview.
In addition, Molaro said he was able to convince Lorre that the show’s fifth season should clarify that Raj and Penny didn’t exactly have a romantic night together.
“I remember the beginning of the season going to Chuck’s office alone and just being like, ‘Look, I really don’t feel great about this ending, and we have a window. We don’t know what happened.’ And he was just like, ‘This again. Oh my god, why are you being such a baby?’ I think was the attitude,” said Molaro. “But he was certainly willing, wanted to hear me out, right? And I said, you know, ‘We don’t know what happened. Maybe they didn’t sleep together. Maybe it was over like so fast it doesn’t even count.’ And he finally relented. And he was the one that said, ‘Okay, well, if you really want to undo this, I would suggest that he was putting on the condom. And doing that is where it ended.’ And that was really funny to me.”
