Indiana Dunes National Park officials on Thursday warned against swimming at five of the park’s beaches because of elevated E. coli levels.
Testing done the day prior showed E. coli levels that exceeded water quality standards for swimming at Mt. Baldy, Central, Dunbar, Portage, Lakefront and West Beach.
“Due to an increased risk of contracting an illness while swimming, the national park advises against swimming at Mt. Baldy, Central, Dunbar, Portage Lakefront, and West Beach until further notice,” Indiana Dunes National Park officials said in social media post on Thursday morning.
Officials said they recommend enjoying the five beaches “from shore only,” but noted all other national park waters were within standards for swimming.
Testing will again be done at the five beaches and officials said they will release updated reports.
Despite the elevated E. coli levels, the beaches will remain open because the National Park Service does not shut down beach access “solely due to elevated bacteria levels,” officials said.
“The beach remains open and available for public use, and the public is advised to take precautions for their own safety based on water quality, weather conditions, and other relevant information,” officials said.
