ROCHESTER, N.Y. — More than a year has passed since payroll problems began in the Rochester City School District.
It all started with the transition to the Oracle payroll software. Soon after, hundreds of RCSD employees reported that they had not been paid. But the district says it’s spent the past year making things right.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski looked into some of the some major improvements over the last year. News10NBC previously reported there were more than 100 salaried teachers and 700 non-teacher employees who were not paid after the payroll transition in July of last year.
At its peak, there were nearly 1,800 claims in October of last year. Today, there are still 80 reported paycheck disputes — much improved from October.
According to the district, 60 of those reports say an employee’s paycheck was incorrect. Nineteen of those reports say an employee hasn’t been paid at all, and just one of those reports claims an employee has missed additional pay.
That number is actually up from last month’s number of 51 reports, but RCSD leaders say there’s a simple explanation for that.
“Our most recent payroll, which was last Friday, our numbers are slightly higher,” said Robert McDow, Chief Financial Officer for RCSD.
“And most of that was [because] we had a group of individuals who, unfortunately, we did not get their time sheets on time. So we had to offer most of them off cycle checks,” Robert McDow said.
A district representative told News10NBC some of those numbers may be a part of a margin of error.
Looking forward, district leaders say they’re looking at different payroll systems, with six interviews conducted in July. Leaders say a final decision should come in a week or so.
