Today, quadruple jumps are a matter of course in men's figure skating. But back in the '80s, that wasn't the case at all. Plenty of skaters tried, of course, during practice sessions, but no one had ever managed to land a quad in competition. The closest, according to CBS Sports, was Czech Josef Sabovcik, who seemingly landed a quad at the 1986 European championships — until officials reviewing video footage said Sabovcik's free foot touched the ice during his landing.
"I remember that there were a few people landing the jump [in practice] long before I did, and by watching them I was inspired to try it myself," Browning said, over a decade after his successful attempt. "After landing it, I certainly expected more skaters to start doing it in competition. I was surprised in the next few years when that really did not happen."
Though he stepped back from competitive skating in 1994, Browning didn't leave the ice. In addition to appearing on TV shows including Skating with Celebrities and co-hosting Battle of the Blades, he toured with Stars on Icefor 30 years...though, as he explained in a 2023 interview with Robert Brodie, he never would have imagined he'd still be skating professionally in his 50s.
“So right from the beginning, my attitude was different," Browning continued. "She did 10 years exactly and quit, just exactly like she said she would do. It’s so Kristi Yamaguchi. But it just made sense to me [to keep going longer]. It made sense to my body, it made sense to my personality, and I was having fun. It was the perfect job for me, right? The perfect job.”
