Why Dianne Abbot has been reinstated to the Labour party ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Diane Abbott has been readmitted to Labour Party, the MP has announced.

The veteran MP was suspended from the party for the second time in July last year after repeating comments about racism which she previously apologised for.

In a statement she shared on X, Abbott said she had been “issued with a formal warning” over a separate tweet where she referred to Israel’s military, the Israel Defence Forces as the “Jewish Defence Force”.

Fellow Labour MP Joani Reid was also readmitted to the party on Thursday evening after “voluntarily” suspending herself in March following the arrest of her husband on suspicion of spying for China.

Why did Abbott get suspended?

Abbott lost the whip and had a lengthy stint sitting as an independent MP after she suggested in a letter to The Observer newspaper in 2023 that Jewish, Irish and Traveller people experience prejudice, but not racism.

At the time, she apologised for the remarks was eventually readmitted to the party just in time to successfully stand as a Labour candidate in the 2024 general election for Hackney North and Stoke Newington London borough .

But in a BBC interview which aired in July last year, she said she did not regret the incident.

Burnham becoming PM not believed to be reason for readmissions

Both Abbott and Reid have also had the Labour whip restored after a period sitting as Independents.

Abbott said in her post she was reinstated after an internal investigation. The party confirmed this in a statement and said she and Reid were reinstated after an “independent review”.

Disccussing the party’s move, a Labour spokesperson, said: “The Labour Party expects the highest standards from our elected representatives and party members.

“The Party assesses any alleged breaches of such standards independently of the leadership and political interference.

“Following a process conducted under Labour Party rules and approved by the independent review board, Diane Abbott and Joani Reid have been readmitted to the Labour Party and have had the Labour whip restored in the House of Commons.

“Diane Abbott has also apologised following the independent process coming to an end.

“All Labour elected representatives must be mindful at all times of their platform and the responsibilities that come with that privilege.”

Abbott said in her post: “Today, following a process conducted in line with party rules and approved by the independent review process, I have been readmitted to the Labour Party.

“I have been issued with a formal warning for a tweet I previously posted. By inadvertently referring to the Israeli Defence Force as the ‘Jewish Defence Force’, I used wording that conflates the actions of the state of Israel with the Jewish community. I am deeply sorry for any hurt caused by that conflation and apologise for any hurt caused by it.

“I have been and remain a lifelong anti-racist and remain deeply committed to ending racism in all its forms.”

It is understood that both readmissions followed formal Labour Party processes and were not linked to Mr Burnham becoming party leader.

Abbott ‘sorry’ for comments

Apologising for the tweet, she said she had “used wording that conflates the actions of the state of Israel with the Jewish community” and was “deeply sorry for any hurt caused by that conflation”.

She added: “I have been and remain a lifelong anti-racist and remain deeply committed to opposing racism in all its forms.”

In her statement, East Kilbride and Strathaven MP, Reid said she was “excited to play a full part in supporting Burnham, his Government, and in renewing Scottish Labour”.

She added: “I have never been part of a police investigation, as a suspect or as a witness, and I am pleased that this has now been recognised.

“The support I have received from colleagues across the political spectrum, my constituents and my local Labour Party has been steadfast.

“I am also deeply grateful to everyone who has stood by me when it was politically easier to distance themselves. You know who you are – thank you.”

Her voluntary suspension earlier this year came after her husband, David Taylor, was arrested along with two other men and accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service.

The three men have since been released on police bail, which in May was extended until August.

There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Ms Reid.
