Steven R. McQueen shared his first social media selfie in five years, just days after making a rare return to the public eye.
The actor’s appearance at the Forever Mystic Falls Fan Meet 7 in Paris on Oct. 3 and 4 marked his first convention appearance in years following the end of The Vampire Diaries.
McQueen is best known for his role as Jeremy Gilbert, Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) little brother, on The CW’s supernatural drama, as well as Jimmy Borelli on Chicago Fire.
Videos and photos from the event began circulating, with much of the focus on his changed appearance. The actor, now 38, has largely stayed away from the spotlight and has previously canceled appearances at other conventions. Just Jared reports that his last major public appearance was at the Thirst Project’s 10th Annual Thirst Gala at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sept. 28, 2019.
While many fans rallied around McQueen, offering support and encouragement, others questioned his weight gain, which he seemingly addressed in his new Instagram post.
Serving a serious and direct look, McQueen captioned the shot, “Back to the gym.”
He then posed a question to his fandom: “Any music suggestions?”
View this post on InstagramFans jumped into the comments with pump-up playlist recommendations, which included Rihanna, Eminem, Evanescence, and more.
Many also sent words of encouragement, as one noted, “Stay strong brother ❤️?.”
“Don’t let yourself be brought down by negative comments, yes always happy,” another wrote, as someone else added, “Yes Steven! But also, remember to be kind to yourself ❤️.”
“So happy you’re back. 80s rock had a way of making your want to rage in the gym,” one comment added.
Earlier this week, McQueen also shared his first Instagram Story in years, which featured a photo of a Peloton bike, giving fans a glimpse into his workout routine.

His last official social media post on the grid dates back to Dec. 27, 2021.
Since then, McQueen hasn’t shared much about his personal life since exiting the spotlight. As Parade reported previously, his father, actor and race-car driver Chad McQueen, died in September 2024 at age 63. While speculation online has linked the loss to McQueen’s decision to take time away from the spotlight and his changed appearance, McQueen has not publicly addressed that connection.
Either way, it seems like fans are thrilled to have Jeremy Gilbert back in the convention circuit, and he’s slowly opening back up to the public on social media as well.
