More than three decades after Nicole Brown Simpson was murdered, her sister Denise Brown says she still feels the case never delivered the justice her family wanted.
In a new memoir, For My Sister Nicole: Love Shouldn’t Hurt, Denise revisits Nicole’s troubled marriage to O.J. Simpson and describes abuse that she says her family did not fully understand at the time.
Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman were killed outside Nicole’s Los Angeles home in June 1994. Simpson was acquitted of the murders in the highly publicized criminal trial in 1995. He was later found liable for the deaths in a 1997 civil case.
Speaking about the aftermath, Denise says the criminal verdict left her without the sense of justice she had hoped for. Simpson died in 2024 without ever being convicted in the criminal case.
Denise’s memoir also details revelations she says she discovered through Nicole’s personal journals after her death. One account involved a family vacation in Hawaii.
Denise recalls that Nicole had stayed covered up despite the warm weather, something the family did not understand at the time. She later learned from Nicole’s writings that she had allegedly been assaulted by Simpson the night before.
“We were there,” Denise told the Los Angeles Times, describing the painful realization that her family had unknowingly been close to some of the abuse.
Denise says she witnessed some troubling incidents herself but did not recognize them as part of a pattern of domestic violence. She has since devoted much of her life to domestic violence awareness.
“I was there. I was involved. But I didn’t know it was domestic violence,” she said, explaining that her understanding of abuse changed after Nicole’s death.
Denise also testified during Simpson’s criminal trial, recounting an alleged incident in which she said Simpson physically attacked Nicole.
Contemporary reporting from The Washington Post documented her emotional testimony about witnessing Simpson throw Nicole against a wall and out of the house.
Today, Denise says she wants Nicole’s story to serve a larger purpose. Rather than focusing solely on the infamous trial, she hopes her memoir will help readers recognize warning signs of domestic violence and encourage victims to seek help.
“It’s too late for Nicole,” Denise told the Los Angeles Times. “I want this book to help others avoid what happened to her.”
