It was a little job advert in Horticultural Week magazine that caught Adam Frost’s eye back in 1990. “Young landscaper required for television garden in Rutland,” it said.
The man was Geoff Hamilton who, by the time the pair crossed paths, was long established as a horticultural journalist and broadcaster. Born in East London in 1936 and raised in Hertfordshire, he worked in his family’s back garden as a child, before honing his skills at college, and opening his own garden centre in Northamptonshire.
From 1980 to his death in 1996, he was the cornerstone of Gardeners’ World, which moved to his own Barnsdale Gardens at Rutland in later years. As one of the show’s longest-serving presenters, and in other series such as Geoff Hamilton’s Cottage Gardens and Paradise Gardens, he was admired for his practical advice, along with his gentle, often self-deprecating humour. RT readers valued his weekly gardening column that ran for seven years.
“You could just sense Geoff was slightly different,” he says fondly of walking round the gardens that first day. “There was a presence, a confidence, I could tell he cared passionately about his work. I was captivated.”
Hamilton was clearly ahead of the curve when it came to landscaping. “He was talking about the destruction being done to our countryside,” says Frost. “He asked, what’s being sprayed on our vegetables? He was organic when it was still probably viewed as slightly hippy-fied. He would always say, ‘The answer is in the soil, boy.’"
To this day, for Frost as for so many keen gardeners everywhere, the legendary gardener remains loved and much missed: “Just recently I told his son Nick, ‘I still miss him. I wish I could go and chat with Geoff about stuff.’ And Nick replied, ‘He was a father figure to you too.’"
Hamilton is never far away from the man he mentored so richly. “After he died, his family gave me his spade,” says Frost. “It’s next to my granddad’s fork in my office.” And he’s outside, too. “I think about him a lot when I’m filming. The people you’ve lost are always with you, in your head.” And in the soil.
