My knowledge of Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ is defined by “Epic: The Musical” and “Percy Jackson,” and I have no shame.
However, once I heard about director Christopher Nolan’s adaptation, the brilliant cast as well as it being filmed on an incredibly rare IMAX camera, I was determined to view it in all of its glory. That was until I realized the nearest IMAX 70mm theater, Nolan’s preferred viewing format, was two hours away and sold out.
Although I’m lucky enough to spend the summer in one of the 14 states that can show ‘The Odyssey’ as Nolan intended, what about movie lovers in the other 36 states that aren’t that lucky, including Alabama?
While I am no cinephile, the fact that Nolan chose IMAX 70mm as the format of his film is a little unusual, and has raised some very important questions among viewers. In particular, there have been concerns regarding inaccessibility and the overall sense of elitism.
To put into perspective the rarity of IMAX 70mm screens, there are only 41 theaters capable of showing it in its original format in the world, 25 of which are in the United States. If you’re in the Tuscaloosa area and itching to see this film, you can go to theaters in Chattanooga, Tenn., Nashville, or Buford, Ga., with the shortest drive being 3 hours. However, if you spend your summers in a state like Montana, your best bet may be to see the film in Canada — which is not only unfeasible but insane.
Unfortunately, the difficulty of viewing the film does not end with just finding a theater; you also have to find a seat. With the excitement surrounding this film, it has become almost impossible for movie-goers to find a seat without booking weeks in advance. Not to mention the pure chaos of resellers online with tickets on eBay reaching unbelievable prices, such as this listing for two tickets for $1,000. However, all of this comes as no surprise to true movie lovers.
Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has made cinematic history as the first narrative film to have been entirely filmed using IMAX cameras, a feat that has long been thought to be too difficult due to the complexities of shooting with IMAX cameras. While this is an amazing accomplishment for Nolan, frustration has crept in among audiences — the majority of viewers are unable to enjoy it, especially those in more rural areas where even regular IMAX theaters are scarce.
The film is still being shown on other screens, but they are simply incapable of recreating the resolution, size or quality of the film in its original form. In fact, diagrams comparing typical IMAX versus IMAX 70mm show that a significant part of the movie is being cut off due to the film ratio. Leading viewers, including myself, to ask: why pay to watch a movie if I’m not going to be able to see all of it anyway?
Sadly, when Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon and Christopher Nolan are all telling you that the best way to view the movie is in IMAX 70mm, there’s a sense of missing out when you’re unable to do so. This is not a fault of us as viewers, but the mentality spread in the media that if you’re not watching the movie as it was intended, you’re doing it the wrong way.
Yes, being able to pull off a feat as Nolan did is no small accomplishment. But not everyone has the means to take cross-country trips to rare movie theaters and then pay an extra $25 to actually see it.
At the end of the day, we should regard this film as what it is: art. But there is something so frustrating when such an impressive film is widely inaccessible to audiences because of cost or location inaccessibility and the elitist mentality that there is a “right way” to experience art.
Unfortunately, when it comes to this IMAX 70mm controversy, it seems Christopher Nolan has lost the plot.
