Indeed, even now, when non-gamers hear the idea – as evidenced by those in our very office – you get the exact same reaction.
So, what makes a game about power washing so enthralling? Ahead of the For One Night Only showcase, PowerWash Simulator 2 designer Dan Berrecloth said simply that "it just scratches that itch for people.
"And then it’s just a case of honing in on making that a full mechanic, and the rest is kind of history really, because it just blew up from there."
"[It] is quite weird from a design perspective. But once you actually drill into why we kind of like that monotonous thing and finding a way to make that fun, it’s a bit of a challenge.
"It’s almost like the perfect vessel for people to either lock in and look at all the details of the levels, or completely tune out, listen to a podcast, play whilst they do it."
I ask Berrecloth how those levels come to be.
"Like, the contrast between dirty and clean has to be really, really drastic, so it’s popping as you’re cleaning away. That’s one of the main things we think about.
Beyond the regular levels, PowerWash has also played host to crossover levels for the likes of Shrek, SpongeBob, Final Fantasy and Berrecloth’s personal favourite, Star Wars – "Working on the Super Star Destroyer was a dream come true." – though he still holds out hope for a Dragon Ball Z crossover.
"There’s a lot of leeway to put a love of love and detail into things, like the way the dirt is on the Super Star bridge is a certain way to indicate certain things.
PowerWash Simulator 2 debuted its bouncy castle level at the For One Night Only showcase, an event showing off the biggest and best of British gaming.
"I think it’s on the up. I think events like this kind of help reinforce that. This is not relying on events in other countries as much as really pushing to start something a bit more grassroots and a bit more UK-based.
You can catch up with For One Night Only from on 29 July 2026 on YouTube, Twitch and Steam.
