CUBS LINEUP — Tonight, the (Jameson Taillon-less) Chicago Cubs begin the first of a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The series carries pretty significant Wild Card implications, especially for the Cardinals, but also for the Cubs.
It’s never easy to win on the road, but the Cubs gotta try to at least split this four-gamer. Here’s how Craig Counsell will kick things off tonight in St. Louis.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Seiya Suzuki, RF Alex Bregman, 3B Carson Kelly, DH Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Dansby Swanson, SS Miguel Amaya, CAlex Bregman got the day off yesterday, but he’s back in the Cubs lineup tonight against the lefty, Matthew Liberatore. Bregman has been 10% better against lefties than righties this season, but almost all of that value comes from his 15.8% walk rate vs southpaws. Otherwise, the AVG is similar, and his SLG is otherwise down.
With a lefty on the mound, Carson Kelly is batting fourth, but not catching, which leaves Miguel Amaya behind the plate, batting ninth.
Ian Happ, who has been horrible versus lefties this season (55 wRC+, 32.5 K%), gets another start against a southpaw. I do wonder how long the Cubs will let him take at-bats versus lefties this year. It’s clearly not working. This is when you really miss Matt Shaw, who can play a corner OF spot and hit lefties.
Happ and Busch have both homered off Liberatore in the past.

Chicago Cubs: David Peterson, LHP
David Peterson has made three solid starts for the Chicago Cubs since being acquired back in June, with his latest outing being the most impressive: 6.2 IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 4K.
That and the fact that the Cardinals are not very good against lefties is the good news. Now, here’s the bad news: His one bad start was awfuuuuuuul, and it was against these very Cardinals: 3.2 IP, 9H, 10ER, 3BB, 3K.
And here’s the brutal news: That’s actually the second time they got to him that badly this season; the first coming from his time on the Mets back in early June: 3.2 IP, 7H, 6ER, 2BB, 1K.
Do the Cardinals just see him well? Are they on a pitch-tip of his? I know he’s had his struggles this season, but these two starts are especially bad. If it happens again tonight, you’ll have to wonder if there’s something more going on.
St. Louis Cardinals: Matthew Liberatore, LHP
This season, Matthew Liberatore has bad results and equally unimpressive peripherals (5.18 ERA, 5.29 xERA, 4.83 FIP). He’s also a lefty, against whom the Cubs have been the second-best offense in baseball this season. And beyond that, he’s coming off a bad start in Anaheim, where the Angels tagged him for five earned runs on nine hits and two walks.
But he was passable against the Cubs twice already this season, including 5.1 scoreless innings in May and 5.0 innings of 3-run ball back before the All-Star break.
The first start was in the middle of the Cubs’ giant, team-wide slump, but they were clicking before the All-Star break, and they couldn’t really break through against him the way other teams have this year. Will their luck finally break tonight? A third time seeing the same pitcher in two months should help.
