With very little hockey going on, we’ve had our attention on the World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor this week. The Blackhawks had four prospects in the event on the initial rosters. That number is now down to three.
Defenseman Xavier Villeneuve, the Blackhawks’ top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, is no longer participating.

— Hockey Canada (@HockeyCanada) July 27, 2026Scott Wheeler of The Athletic reported Villeneuve is “still rehabbing his hips, which bothered him throughout draft year. He’s fine.” Wheeler then added a link to a piece he wrote about Villeneuve in June in which he wrote:
“[Villeneuve] dealt with hip issues this season, which he told The Athletic aren’t major and were “nothing that anybody would operate on,” but that some teams do wonder about and kept him off the ice to start his offseason as he continued his rehab.”
Villeneuve is headed to Boston University for the coming season. Wheeler including “He’s fine” to his initial tweet leads me to be not very worried at this point. But it’s still unfortunate that he won’t be participating in the games this week for Canada.
The Blackhawks still have three prospects in the event: Mason West (USA), Ryan Roobroeck (Canada) and Samu Alalauri (Finland). Alalauri reportedly missed the first game of the event because of illness.
