This morning’s session sees eight individual events, and no relays – the women’s 4×200 free has just eight nations entered so will go straight to finals.
Duncan Scott is back for his first individual event since the 200 IM on the first day of competition, swimming in the second of the circle-seeded heats in the 200 fly. He posted a time of 1:54.89 at the Aquatics GB Championships in April, just ahead of #3 seed Ed Mildred‘s 1:55.03, who swims in the first heat for England.
Returning champion Lewis Clareburt is the fourth seed in 1:55.24, with South Africa’s world junior medalist Kris Mihaylov entered sixth-fastest. Matt Temple, normally seen in the 100 fly, is also entered while 200 backstroke medalist Luke Greenbank is the #9 seed in 1:57.80. Harrison Turner, who was 4th in the 100 fly last night, is the top seed in 1:54.17 and won bronze at the World Championships last year.
India’s Sajan Prakash, who has finished ninth in the heats at the last two Games, will be hoping to make the final again after doing so in 2018 due to James Guy‘s withdrawal.
There are just 12 swimmers in the women’s 400 IM, with eight entered under 4:48 and the other four entered over 5:00. That should make for some relatively relaxed heat swims from the favorites, with world medalist Jenna Forrester and world junior medalist Amalie Smith the top two seeds.
Lauren Cox is the top seed in the women’s 50 back in 27.15, with Mollie O’Callaghan (27.19), Iona Anderson (27.33), and Kylie Masse (27.57) completing a high-quality field. Irish record holder Danielle Hill is also in the field, as are two South African swimmers who have held the African record in the past 12 months. Jessica Thompson is the #6 seed in 27.79, with Olivia Nel the #8 seed in 27.91.
The men’s 100 free looks to be the best event of the morning, with stars such as Kyle Chalmers, Matt Richards, and Flynn Southam in action. Chalmers is the top seed in 47.17, ahead of Richards’ 47.53, but Southam set a new Games record of 47.09 while leading off the men’s 4×100 free relay on Friday and won silver in the 50 free last night in a big best of 21.44.
Jacob Mills (47.72), Pieter Coetze (47.88) and Kai Taylor (47.97) are also entered under 48 seconds, while Gabe Shepherd will be one to watch in the penultimate heat after setting a lifetime bests in the 100 free and nearing his 200 free best so far this week on relay leadoffs.
Josh Liendo, who won the 100 fly in a new Games record last night before placing 4th in the 50 free, is just the 16th seed in 49.36, but should be one of the fastest finishers this morning. Lamar Taylor, Mikkel Lee, Antoine Sauve, and Tolu Young will also represent the NCAA, all for different nations, while James Allison will be one to watch from the final heat before the circle-seeded heats after breaking 50 seconds three times on relay leadoffs so far, setting a new lifetime best of 49.39.
Angharad Evans is not entered in the women’s 50 breast, but 2022 champion Lara van Niekerk is the top seed in 30.26. Sienna Toohey, who won bronze on the 100 last night, is the #2 seed in 30.39 with England’s Imogen Clark third. Clark set a new English record of 30.02 to win silver four years ago. Scotland’s Anna Morgan is the #4 seed and the only Scot in the field.
Singapore’s Russel Pang is the top seed in heat 1 of the men’s 800 free in 8:04.70, nearly ten seconds ahead of Jersey’s Samuel Sterry. Oscar Maddrell, who is just 14 years old, is the third-fastest man in the heat at 8:41.34, but did set a PB of 8:33.65 at the Aquatics GB Next Gen Championships last week.
England’s Brock Whiston is the top seed in the women’s SB8 100 breast in 1:20.32, seven seconds ahead of SB7 50 breast world record holder Iona Winnifreth, who is swimming up a category. Uganda’s Husnah Kukandakwe is the #3 seed in 1:27.37 and could win their first swimming medal of the meet, with it appearing that they have never won a medal in swimming before.
The men’s event has ten swimmers, so there will be some jeopardy in the heats this morning. Australia’s Beau Matthews, New Zealand’s defending champion Joshua Willmer, and Canada’s Fernando Lu are the class of the field with entry times in the 1:10s, but 2022 silver medalist Timothy Hodge is the #4 seed after winning the S9* 100 back last night.
*Athletes can be classified in different categories for IM (M) or breaststroke (B) than they are for the other strokes
