Nick Saban didn’t win a national championship in Year 1 at Alabama, even though it feels like he did.

Now an ESPN college football analyst, Saban is seeing the grand expectations that are following one of his former assistants.
It’s Lane Kiffin, and his arrival at LSU has been met with a lot of noise and, yes, a lot of expectations. Like, the highest expectations one could imagine. But Saban appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, and he had a message for those LSU followers about those expectations for Kiffin in Year 1.
Saban believes the national title or bust sentiment that’s out there right now coming out of SEC Media Days this week is a little unrealistic. It doesn’t mean Saban isn’t a believer in Kiffin, who worked under Saban at Alabama from 2014-16. Quite the contrary. Saban just wants to dip the whole thing in a little more reality.
“I think Lane did really well in terms of roster management, bringing 59 new players in (with) a very good recruiting class, but they also got top-end bunches of guys out of the portal,” Saban said.
But there are also question marks, Saban also said on Thursday.
“Do they have enough depth on their team to be able to sustain the grind of playing the kind of schedule they have to play, and do they have the culture built to be able to do that?” Nick Saban said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that Lane will be successful at LSU. I just don’t know if it’s realistic to think that turnaround is going to happen immediately.”
