Bono is remembering the heartbreaking moment he and Michael Stipe learned of Dolly Parton‘s death, in a new interview. The U2 frontman and R.E.M. frontman happened to be in a car together when they found out the 80-year-old singer had died after a battle with cancer on Aug. 25, 2026, and it immediately brought out deep emotions.
“I remember I was with [R.E.M. frontman] Michael Stipe in a car when the news came in, and he actually fell down and started sobbing. He just could not believe it,” Bono, 66, told the BBC.
“Probably the only thing that people can agree on in the entire world right now is Dolly Parton,” he added. “Whether you’re gay or straight or conservative or liberal, she was ready for you to fly at her show.”
In addition to opening up about Stipe’s raw reaction to Parton’s death, Bono recalled the “shock” he felt since he had recorded vocals with her for the U2 song “Torn” less than three months before. The recording turned out to be the legendary star’s last ever recording.
“We knew she was ill, but we had no idea that it’d be her last vocal,” he explained. “That was a real shock. A shock for us because we’d been working with her, but a shock for anyone who loves music.”
Bono also opened up about how he sent Parton a set of bagpipes for her birthday before she decided to listen to some demos for U2’s latest album Carnaval de Luz.
“We had some folk songs we were playing, there was one called Lifelong, and I remember her saying, ‘You know, that’s a little too Irish for me’,” he said. “So she said, ‘Look, I’ve started a song called Torn. You can take it where you want, and I might like where you take it’. And she did.”
In September, Bono told Rolling Stone that “Torn” was recorded in June, and said he was impressed with Parton, who got out of her bed to record it.
“When she got ill, she got out of her bed to sing this song. And you can hear that,” he remembered. “And I can’t even listen to it now.”
“Torn” is the closing track on U2’s Carnaval de Luz, which will be released on Nov. 13.
