It was another noteworthy day in the Cubs’ minor league system with a bit of a mixed bag of results. Iowa lost a rain-shortened game with Jaxon Wiggins on the mound, where he struggled again. Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs dropped their rain-shortened game to the Gwinnett Stripers (Braves) on Thursday night by the score of 4-2. Jaxon Wiggins was on the mound for Iowa, and he struggled a bit as he continues battling back from elbow troubles. In 2.2 innings of work, Wiggins allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out a pair of hitters. Granted, Gwinnett’s lineup right now is loaded with Major League talent, but still, this marks his third straight start allowing 3+ runs, and he’s not going more than three innings.
The Cubs did get on the board first in this one with a BJ Murray RBI single in the first, but Gwinnett jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second and never gave it back. Both teams tacked on a run in the fifth. The Cubs scored theirs on a throwing error after Brett Bateman stole second, allowing him to come all the way around to score. But after Gwinnett made it 4-2 in the fifth, the game was delayed and eventually called due to weather, giving the Braves the win.

Another comeback attempt came up just short for Knoxville in their 5-4 loss to the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels) on Thursday. Brody McCullough started for Knoxville and put forth a pretty solid outing. Neither team scored in the first three innings, then the Smokies struck first in the fourth on an Ethan Hearn solo homer.
McCullough kept the Trash Pandas scoreless until the fifth. With two outs and a runner on second, Frankie Scalzo Jr. came on in relief of McCullough and gave up a game-tying RBI single. Scalzo Jr. then allowed three earned runs of his own in the bottom of the sixth, putting the Smokies in a 4-1 hole.
But in the seventh, Knoxville put forth a comeback effort. With one out and runners on second and third, Andy Garriola tied the game up with one swing of the bat, belting a three-run blast to left field, making the score 4-4.
The score remained that way until the ninth, when, unfortunately, the Trash Pandas would walk this one off. With one out and runners on first and second, Tyler Santana gave up a walk-off base hit, handing the Smokies the loss.

South Bend picked up the lone win of the Cubs’ minor league system with a 4-2 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers). Jose Escobar picked up right where he left off after Wednesday’s big performance with an RBI triple in the first, bringing around Josiah Hartshorn to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. In the third, the two teams traded runs. Ethan Flanagan gave up a solo homer, but Kade Snell picked him up in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single, giving South Bend the lead back.
The score remained at 2-1 all the way until the bottom of the seventh. That’s when Hartshorn provided the Cubs with some much-needed insurance, blasting a two-run homer way out to right field, increasing the lead to 4-1. That home run stood up as the game winner as well, with Wisconsin picking up one run in the ninth, but Ethan Bell closed the door on the comeback attempt and South Bend earned a 4-2 win.
