Exploring Your Creative Genius: Episode 167
chapelboroaudio.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/2026/07%20-%20July/18/EYCG_EP%20167%20FULL.mp3 In this week’s show I talked about how to apply your determination to be intentionally creative to your use of language — how your undivided attention when another is speaking is one the greatest gifts we can give each other and how it’s possible that speaking appreciatively about something might cause it to appreciate in value. I provide a couple examples of being intentional in the language that you use. Here’s another, one that fascinates me. Let’s say you are working on a new something–a painting, a business idea, a plan for your life. It’s time, you’ve decided, to get some input from a friend or associate. Research has found that you get a very different response from your friend when you ask for their advice rather than asking for their opinion. When you ask folks for their opinion they tend to create an emotional distance, assume a more critical point of view, and depending on how they are feeling in the moment will likely tell you what is wrong with the idea. When you ask for their advice they lean in emotionally, assume something more like a partnership point of view, and explore their experiences and knowledge to find ways that will help you improve your idea. That’s surely worth your intentional consideration, yeah?
