A friend of the 20-year-old co-pilot who died after a Florida plane crash on Sunday is speaking out.
Mikaela Schluth spoke to CBS News after hearing her friend, Nathalia Filgueiras, talk to air traffic control during her final moments. She had known the co-pilot since middle school.
“It was definitely, probably the worst thing I’ve ever heard,” she said. “I’m just so proud of how she handled it and how she was able to stay calm and give information up until the last minute.”
The Learjet 60 was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, but crashed in Palm Beach County. All nine people on board died. The passengers who were killed have been identified as Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp, a couple with two children: Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2; Rachael Reed; Charmi Fehr; and Anita Maria Cetina.
Filgueiras was flying the plane with 55-year-old captain Jeffrey Gregory.
As the jet was rapidly descending, Filgueiras could be heard talking to air traffic controllers, per a recording by LiveATC.net.
“722 Bravo Delta, we’re descending 8000 Mayday, Mayday, we’re descending 10,000 ft per minute,” she said. Her voice became more panicked as she said, “Declare an emergency 722 Bravo Delta, we are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute.”
Filgueiras’ mother, Camila Corteleti, told The New York Times that her daughter had over 1,300 hours of flight time and received her pilot’s license at 17. She was working for Upper Jets when she died.
“She loved the freedom,” Corteleti said. “It was completely different seeing the world from the top.”
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating what went wrong.
According to People, Thomas Chapman, a member of the NTSB, shared during a press conference that investigators are attempting to gather pieces of the plane, which created a crater on impact.
“Our mission is to understand not just what happened but why it happened,” Chapman said, “and to recommend changes to prevent it from happening again.”
