The Chicago area will continue to see degraded air quality due to Canadian wildfire smoke, but another weather threat looms in the forecast this week.
Sunday will get underway with mostly cloudy skies according to the NBC 5 Storm Team, with the entire area still experiencing “unhealthy” levels of air pollution due to smoke continuing to push into the region from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota.
As of 8 a.m., air quality readings in Chicago were still in the “unhealthy” category, and are expected to remain that way for most of Sunday, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
Those visiting Chicago-area beaches will also likely have to stay out of the water, as winds out of the northeast are expected to continue to churn up waves of 4-to-7 feet for most of the morning and even into the early afternoon, posing a significant risk to swimmers, along with dangerous rip currents.
Those winds are expected to ease later in the day, and the region can expect high temperatures in the low-80s under hazy sunshine, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
After a cool overnight period with temperatures dropping into the 60s, the region will likely see highs in the mid-to-upper 80s on Monday, with wildfire smoke slowly starting to push out of the area ahead of another storm system that’s expected to sweep through the Midwest late Monday night.
That storm system could potentially produce strong-to-severe thunderstorms, with most of the Chicago area at a “slight” risk of severe weather Monday night according to the Storm Prediction Center. The main threats with any thunderstorms that develop will be hail and wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour, though an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, according to forecast models.
Those storms could stick around into the early morning hours of Tuesday, and when they depart more wildfire smoke could return to the region midweek. Highs Wednesday are expected to cool into the upper-70s and low-80s, with temperatures slowly increasing through the rest of the week under partly-to-mostly sunny skies.
