ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert is posted into late Thursday night as thick wildfire smoke has made a return to our region. This is a result of fires burning in western Ontario, Canada and northern Minnesota. The smoke from these fires is being transported across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast. The forecast is for the smoke to become thicker at the surface on Thursday before it starts to get better through the day on Friday. The Air Quality Index has been hovering in the “unhealthy for some”/”unhealthy” category most of Wednesday, and will likely drop into the “unhealthy”/very unhealthy” category on Thursday. What does this mean? It means if you are sensitive to pollutants, you really want to avoid being outside much at all. Even if you are perfectly healthy and unbothered by most pollutants, it’s not a bad idea to limit time outdoors. If you do need to be outdoors for an extended period of time, it may benefit you to wear a mask.
Conditions look like they may start to improve through the day on Friday, though that smoke may make a return once again later Friday and into Saturday. Aside from the smoke, our weather is actually very quiet. If the smoke wasn’t extremely thick, we’d see a good deal of sun on Thursday, but most of the sun will be blocked out by the smoke. Because of that, temperatures will likely remain in the 70s on Thursday with just the slight chance of a shower.
We should see some sun returning on Friday, especially into the afternoon. Meanwhile, rain and some storms will return on Saturday. Sunday should see some nice improvement, so if you have the choice between being outdoors on Saturday or Sunday, Sunday looks like the better day for outdoor activities.
