Piastri explains why and when McLaren car’s weakness is exposed ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Oscar Piastri believes McLaren’s inconsistent performances this season are partly rooted in a specific external factor, with the Australian identifying strong winds as a condition that repeatedly pushes the MCL40 beyond its operating sweet spot.

The British Grand Prix provided the clearest illustration yet of the team's vulnerability. Despite arriving at Silverstone expecting to challenge near the front, McLaren emerged only as the fourth-fastest package behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull, with both Piastri and Lando Norris battling an unpredictable car throughout the weekend.

For Piastri, whose dramatic high-speed spin through Becketts and Chapel underlined the car’s knife-edge balance, the gusty conditions at the former RAF airfield laid bare a weakness that has lingered throughout the campaign.

McLaren car’s vulnerability exposed

Reflecting on the weekend, Piastri admitted the challenging weather highlighted the limitations that McLaren has often managed to disguise when conditions are more favourable.

"I think the conditions [at Silverstone] have definitely exposed where we are weak," he said.

"I think when the grip is good, when things are consistent, we can be in or close to the fight, so when things look consistent, we look okay and mask some of our issues.

"Whereas [in qualifying at Silverstone], the conditions were very tough, and there is nowhere to hide, so it is not a huge surprise we struggled and were so far off.”

Silverstone's reputation for unpredictable gusts once again proved significant, with the changing wind conditions making it increasingly difficult for McLaren to keep the MCL40 within its preferred operating window.

While the car has shown race-winning potential on more stable weekends, fluctuations in grip and balance have repeatedly exposed its shortcomings.

Tyre temperatures and changing conditions remain the challenge

Piastri also suggested the issue extends well beyond one circuit, pointing to a pattern that has emerged at several races this season whenever external conditions become more demanding.

According to the nine-time Grand Prix winner, managing tyre temperatures remains one of the biggest obstacles, particularly when combined with high winds and inconsistent grip levels.

"We've got some clear areas we want to work on, but at the moment, we clearly seem to struggle when things are a bit more difficult,” he explained.

"We saw in Canada and Monaco when the tyre temperatures are difficult and tricky to get in, we struggled when the wind is high, and we've struggled when everything is just a little bit outside of our comfort zone."

The comments paint a clear picture of where McLaren must focus its development efforts.

Rather than searching for outright pace, the team's priority appears to be widening the MCL40's operating window, ensuring it can remain competitive even when changing weather, gusting winds and difficult tyre preparation threaten to unsettle its balance.
