How about Tyrone Taylor, man? His was the first homer last night, setting the tone for what was to come. But I mean beyond that, he’s just been such a fantastic addition as a righty bat off the bench and for match-up starts. That was his first homer with the Cubs, and over his 50 plate appearances since the Trade Deadline, he’s hit .409/.460/.545/181 wRC+. Not only that, but he’s doing it primarily in place of what otherwise had been Ian Happ starts against lefties, where he’d become almost unplayable. That’s a massive upgrade, even only at one spot about a quarter of the time. Not too often you hear a pitcher after the game saying the other team had his pitch tips (usually pitchers don’t want to alert the world that it’s possible with them). Cubs are perhaps very good at picking up pitch-tipping. But, yeah, it’d be cool if the Cubs were getting particularly good at it. I don’t want it to get lost in the swirl of excitement about the Cubs’ blowout win last night, so if you missed it: Justin Steele is set to begin his rehab assignment tomorrow with the Iowa Cubs. Counting on a return to the big league team before the end of the season is probably unfair, but hoping on it? Absolutely. Even hoping that he quickly settles into being able to throw two very good innings every four days or so? Yes, I think that’s OK to hope for. And if that does happen at Iowa by the final week or two of the season, you never know. The Cubs might decide they can accommodate that kind of limited schedule in exchange for Steele’s upside (particularly in the postseason). That is to say, I don’t *think* Steele can be spun up into a traditional reliever this month (i.e., single-inning outings, three+ times a week, sometimes going back-to-back days, etc.). He’s done it before in his career – which gives me optimism on him succeeding more generally as a reliever – but given his longer track record as a starter and long rehab process, I don’t think the Cubs are going to want to mess around TOO much with heavy relief usage. It isn’t necessarily an Injured List situation, but obviously it’s good to have Matt Shaw back in any case. Mostly what you don’t want is to see Ramirez’s outstanding rookie season derailed in the final month by trying to play through a back issue. I might dig into this more later, but for now, I just wanted to share a really good read from the Tribune on Ryan Zeferjahn’s arrival to, and early struggles with, the Cubs. If a guy is just a little off and that pairs up with a big transition to a new team, it can kind of exacerbate a lot of things. The Padres are reportedly set to call up 20-year-old catching prospect Ethan Salas today. It’s been a really atypical development trajectory for the former uber prospect, who was playing games at Double-A as a 17-year-old(!) in his professional debut season. He struggled at that time, naturally, and then spent 2024 and 2025 at High-A and Double-A, respectively, putting up pretty awful numbers (but, as a legit catcher who was still wildly young for his level). This year, the switch seems to have flipped, and, after a mid-year promotion to Triple-A, he’s been raking (with impeccable peripherals). I have to assume the transition to the big leagues will still be a long one – succeeding as a 20-year-old in MLB is hard enough, but doing it as a catcher? That’s a tallllll ask – but there’s obviously a potential star here in the years ahead.
