PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Tennis Club of Rochester on Kreag Road is hosting an International Tennis Federation tournament this week.
The club has been hosting the M15 tournament since 2007. Practice rounds and qualifying rounds took place today, so I caught up with tournament director Trey Kernan to learn more about the event.
“I really liken it to the minor leagues of baseball where this is still professional but lower level,” Kernan said.
The Rochester M15 is on the USTA Pro Circuit, aimed at helping up-and-coming players become stars of the tour.
Yu Tanimoto plays at RIT and is competing in the tournament. “It’s a really high level tournament. I’m just looking for experience. I can play against good players and have some fun,” Tanimoto said.
His college teammates had a clear message when they found out he was playing. “They’re like, yeah, good luck. I mean, just don’t get killed,” Tanimoto joked.
So it’s legit. Thirty-two singles players will make up the qualifying draw with eight in the main draw. Sixteen teams will compete in doubles.
“A lot of these guys are currently college players or just younger players looking to get ATP ranking points,” Kernan said.
The week-long tournament wraps on Sunday and is free to attend. “I highly encourage everyone from all around the area to come out and watch these guys play,” Kernan said.
