Fairfield University in Connecticut will depart the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for the Coastal Athletic Conference (CAA) in the 2027-2028 season.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who first broke the news, the CAA extended a formal invitation earlier this week. On Friday, Fairfield confirmed the move.

“It’s an exciting day for the CAA as we welcome Fairfield University as the 14th member of the conference,” CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said. “Athletically, Fairfield’s sports sponsorship fits perfectly with what is offered by the CAA and the institution has certainly shown its commitment to being successful in basketball and its other Olympic sports. Fairfield University is an outstanding academic institution and adds to the list of the prestigious CAA membership.”

Fairfield has won the MAAC Commissioner’s Cup, which evaluates results across sports, in each of the last three years. It’s programs in baseball, women’s basketball, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, and women’s soccer have all earned national rankings since 2021.

Fairfield won the 2026 MAAC conference championships in both men’s and women’s swimming & diving.

Fairfield is already an associate member in the CAA with it’s men’s lacrosse team (even though the MAAC sponsors a men’s lacrosse championship).

While many recent conference realignments have been driven by football – this one doesn’t appear to be on a surface level. Fairfield dropped its football team in 2003, and the MAAC is a non-football conference while the CAA sponsors FCS football.

The move has, however, led to speculation about a possible return to football for the Stags.

The swimming & diving program, led since 2024 by Jake Lichter, won its first conference titles in three years in February. They last won in 2023, when the women took the conference crown.

The 2026 women’s meet was won in dramatic fashion. Fairfield overcame a 123 point diving advantage to Marist, and finished the meet strong to win by just 10 points.

The team is expected to return strong next year – the men’s side only graduated 187 of its 969 individual points, with the senior class being the lowest-scoring class. The women’s side graduates 245.5 points, but again: freshmen and sophomores scored 589 of the team’s 879.5 individual points.

The CAA, meanwhile, was won by the UNCW men for the 5th straight year, while the William & Mary women won their first title since 2022.

While the MAAC has always had a fun and entertaining championship, the CAA will be a step up for the Stags. The men’s and women’s teams would have projected out mid-pack at last year’s CAA championship meet.

Fairfield, located in coastal Connecticut about 90 minutes from New York City, is a private Jesuit university with about 5,400 undergraduates.
