The pressure is on Rudi Garcia’s team. We look ahead to Saturday’s Group G contest at the FIFA World Cup with our New Zealand vs Belgium prediction and preview.
New Zealand vs Belgium: The Key Insights
The Opta supercomputer expects Belgium to win this one; they came out on top in a convincing 80.3% of 25,000 pre-match simulations. Belgian players have had 69 shots at the World Cup since last scoring in 2022. New Zealand are yet to win at the finals in eight attempts.Belgium can ill afford another slip-up at the World Cup when they face New Zealand on Saturday in Vancouver.
Rudi Garcia’s side have just two points from as many Group G games, leaving them third in the pool but with qualification in their own hands. A victory at BC Place would guarantee a top-two spot.
Opta’s live tournament predictor still gives them a 92.0% chance of reaching the knockout stages, despite back-to-back draws with Egypt and Iran.
Despite Nathan Ngoy’s second-half red card, 10-man Belgium had 23 unsuccessful shots in Sunday’s goalless draw with Iran. That was their most without scoring in a World Cup game since 1994 against Saudi Arabia (28), and this profligate trend has become common.
Across this tournament and the last edition four years ago, Belgium have scored just two goals in five matches. One of those was an own goal from Egypt’s Mohamed Hany in their opening 1-1 draw.
Belgian players have had 73 shots across those two tournaments, with only Michy Batshuayi finding the net against Canada in 2022. They have had 69 attempts since last scoring, with Kevin De Bruyne involved in 40% of them (16 shots, created 12).
It is not all bad news for Garcia’s side, who are unbeaten in 15 games in all competitions (W9 D6). Belgium have only managed one longer undefeated streak, going 24 matches between September 2016 and July 2018 before a World Cup loss to France in Russia.
Thibaut Courtois could also make a record-breaking 18th appearance at the finals, overtaking Enzo Scifo’s 17 for Belgium. Only Peter Shilton and Fabien Barthez (10 each) have kept more World Cup clean sheets than Courtois’ eight.
New Zealand have just one point after falling to a 3-1 defeat against group leaders Egypt. Finn Surman’s headed opener gave Darren Bazeley’s team a great start, but Mohamed Salah and Mostafa Zico soon stole the show to leave the All Whites with an all too familiar feeling.
They have taken the lead in three of their eight World Cup games but won none of those. (D2 L1). New Zealand are just the second team to fail to win any of the first three World Cup games in which they led, along with Bulgaria, who failed to win their first six such matches.
Another comeback defeat leaves New Zealand’s chance of reaching the round of 32 at just 8.0% according to the Opta supercomputer, and Bazeley desperately needs his team to find their first victory on the global stage.
They remain winless after their first eight World Cup matches (D4 L4) with only Honduras (9 – D3 L6) playing more games without victory at the finals, but any hopes of an unlikely win may be built on improving at the back.
New Zealand have conceded at least two goals in five of their eight World Cup outings (62.5%), doing so in all three group games in 1982 and both in 2026. Of nations to play at least eight matches, only Ivory Coast have conceded more than once in a higher ratio of matches (7/11, 63.6%).
New Zealand vs Belgium Head-to-Head
This will be the first meeting of any kind between this pair.
However, New Zealand are unbeaten in their last two World Cup matches against European opposition.
They managed 1-1 draws against Slovakia and Italy in 2010 at the tournament held in South Africa.
Belgium, meanwhile, could become the first European team since themselves in 1998 to draw all three World Cup group stage matches.
New Zealand vs Belgium Prediction
The Opta supercomputer ran 25,000 pre-match simulations of this clash, and Belgium won a massive 80.3% of them.
New Zealand achieved a first World Cup victory in only 7.9% of data-led simulations, while the draw accounted for 11.8% of scenarios.
