Hours after news broke of Dolly Parton’s death, Kesha took the stage in Pittsburgh with a tribute that was far more personal than a simple cover.
During her Aug. 25 concert at the Pavilion at Star Lake, Kesha, 39, performed Parton’s “Old Flames (Can’t Hold a Candle to You),” telling the crowd that she wanted to honor the country music legend through a song that has been part of her own family story for decades.
The connection goes back to Kesha’s mother, songwriter Pebe Sebert, who co-wrote “Old Flames” with Hugh Moffatt. The song was first recorded by Joe Sun in 1978 before Parton released her version in 1980. Parton’s recording became a No. 1 country hit.
But the song meant much more to Kesha than a hit from her mother’s songwriting catalog.
Kesha Said Dolly Parton’s Song Helped Her Family
While introducing the song, Kesha explained that her mother’s songwriting success helped provide for their family when she was growing up.
She told the audience that the song “bought us a house” and helped put her through school.
Years later, the story came full circle when Parton joined Kesha for a new recording of “Old Flames” on Kesha’s 2017 album Rainbow.
That collaboration was particularly meaningful because Kesha was going through a difficult period at the time, including her highly publicized legal battle with producer Dr. Luke. Kesha later described Parton’s support as deeply empowering.
At Tuesday’s concert, Kesha remembered Parton as more than a musical hero.
“We literally lost an angel,” she told the crowd, adding that Parton would continue to live through her art, kindness and love.
Kesha then sang the song her mother had written for Parton nearly 50 years earlier.
Parton died Aug. 25 at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
