Tim Curry spent decades playing larger-than-life characters, but one of his most memorable movie stories happened when he wasn’t playing the villain.
While filming Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Curry found himself working at the Plaza Hotel, then owned by Donald Trump. Years later, the actor recalled some of the unusual encounters he had with Trump, 80, and his then-wife, Ivana Trump.
Curry played Mr. Hector, the suspicious concierge who keeps an eye on Kevin McCallister after the youngster checks into the hotel.
A significant portion of the 1992 sequel was filmed at the Plaza, and Curry remembered being asked by Ivana about the hotel’s interior design.
“She knocked on my door and said, ‘Are you happy in your room? Do you like the way it looks?'” Curry recalled in a 2025 interview with The Guardian.
There was just one problem: He didn’t like it.
“And I loathed it actually,” Curry said, explaining that he nevertheless gave her a polite answer.
Curry also recalled Trump enthusiastically promoting his then-girlfriend Marla Maples to director Chris Columbus during production, telling the filmmaker that she was a brilliant actress.
Trump ultimately appeared in the finished movie in his brief cameo as Kevin asks for directions inside the Plaza.
The cameo has become one of the most talked-about pieces of Home Alone 2 trivia. Columbus, 67, later said he felt pressured to include Trump because the production was filming at his hotel.
For Curry, though, the movie remains one of the many fascinating stops in a career that included everything from Rocky Horror and Clue to It and Muppet Treasure Island.
Curry died on Aug. 25. He was 80.
