ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Seneca Park Zoo has a new elephant. Felix, a 43-year-old born in Zimbabwe, came to Rochester from the Maryland Zoo, where she was the only female elephant in a now-bachelor herd.
Monroe County Executive Adam Bello made the announcement on Wednesday at a news conference. As he explained, the Maryland Zoo was looking for a zoo to send Felix to after deciding that it would transition to an all-male herd. It chose Seneca Park Zoo because of its experience with caring for older elephants and its all-female herd.
“Seneca Park Zoo staff have a combined 86 years of elephant care experience. They are experts with a deep understanding of the complex physiological, psychological, and social needs of these highly intelligent animals,” Bello said.
Felix joins female elephants Moki, Lilac, and Genny C at Seneca Park Zoo. Bello said the Maryland Zoo staff prepared Felix for weeks and accompanied her on her move. Some staff will stay in Rochester for several days to ensure that Felix adjusts to her new home.
“Staff here at Seneca Park Zoo and Maryland Zoo have worked hand-in-hand to discuss Felix’s knees and ensure that she can easily acclimate to her new home,” Bello said.
Scientists believe that female elephants do better around other females because they tend to form supportive groups more than males do.
