Budget season is nearing its conclusion in local government, as more and more town and county boards are finalizing their numbers for the upcoming fiscal year. This week, we’ll get final budget votes in Durham County as well as the towns of Hillsborough, Pittsboro, and Chapel Hill. Many of the big decisions have already been made, but council members in Chapel Hill may consider last-minute adjustments after Orange County Commissioners signed off on a plan to eliminate roughly $600,000 in county funding for the town’s library. County commissioners agreed to zero out that funding over the next three years – slowing the process down by a year longer than originally proposed – so Chapel Hill will need to find about $200,000 in its own budget to continue funding the library at its current level next year.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is slated to approve next year’s budget when they meet at 7 p.m. Monday, June 8. Board members have agreed to a slight increase in property taxes to ensure the town is fiscally prepared for some upcoming large projects. Click here for a link to the full agenda.

The Chapel Hill Town Council is also slated to adopt their budget when they meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 10. (Watch for some possible late amendments here, now that Orange County Commissioners have finalized plans to eliminate county-level funding for the town’s library: commissioners agreed to draw down that funding over three years instead of two, to make it easier for the town to adjust its own budget accordingly.) Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, June 8. The town board is slated to approve next year’s budget; they’ll also hold a public hearing on development fees for the upcoming fiscal year. Click here for the full agenda.

Durham County Commissioners will also approve their 2026-27 budget when they meet at 7 p.m. Monday, June 8. Click here for the agenda, which also includes a proclamation recognizing National Pride Month – a proclamation that now carries extra weight, after county commissioners stepped in late last week to reverse a county official’s decision to remove Pride Month displays from Durham libraries.

And the Durham school board meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 9. Click here for the agenda, which will include a budget update one day after county commissioners approve their final budget for next year.
