For generations of moviegoers, Luke Skywalker staring out at twin suns over Tatooine was a seminal moment in their cinematic experience. The actor who gave that farm boy his earnest heart turns 75 on Friday, September 25, at the end of a week that touched nearly every chapter of his career.
Mark Hamill was 25 when Star Wars opened on May 25, 1977, and he had never starred in a feature film. During his screen test opposite Harrison Ford, he was given only a few pages and could not tell whether George Lucas meant the dialogue to be played straight. That same week, Disney+ greenlit a new Darkwing Duck series with Hamill voicing the title hero, Drake Mallard. Seth Rogen voices sidekick Launchpad McQuack, and Lizzy Caplan plays Gosalyn Mallard. The original cartoon ran for 91 episodes after its 1991 debut, and the new series picks up with the caped mallard stranded for 35 years in a world that has never heard of him.
Hamill has said he is finished playing Luke, saying that the franchise should focus on its newer characters. The work has kept coming regardless. His turn as the menacing Major in Stephen King‘s The Long Walk reached No. 1 on HBO Max within a day of its July streaming debut.
Nearly five decades after A New Hope, his career now spans a galaxy far, far away, Gotham City, Broadway and St. Canard. In December, he and York will mark 48 years of marriage, a partnership that began in 1978, the year after Star Wars made him a household name.
