Kentucky Derby Winner Golden Tempo Does It Again in the Belmont Stakes .. US Racing ...Middle East

News by : (TOP world News today) -

Golden Tempo has done it again! The Kentucky Derby (G1) came through with another thrilling stretch-long rally and won the 158th Belmont Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

And once again, trainer Cherie DeVaux made history: She became the first female trainer to win two Triple Crown races and the second female trainer in three years to pull it off (Jena Antonucci trained 2023 Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo).

Just before the race, the rain started falling, but the track remained fast.

The field of nine did not run as quickly as they did in the Derby, which had a field of 18 3-year-olds. And when it came time for Golden Tempo to turn on the jets, jockey Jose Ortiz asked, and the champion delivered.

And what a thrilling finish it was for the third and final Belmont at Saratoga – the Belmont returns to a rebuilt Belmont Park in 2027.

Winning time for the 1 ¼ miles was 2:03.49.

Commandment, who was a disappointing seventh in the Derby, ran a solid race and finished second, followed by Derby runner-up and favorite Renegade and Chief Wallabee.

“We all knew he wasn’t going to get the kind of setup he did in the Derby,’’ Ortiz said. ‘I was following Renegade, who is always a good target. I’m very happy to win today, the last Belmont at Saratoga.”

With the win, Golden Tempo (6-1) became the second straight Derby-Belmont winner. A year ago, Sovereignty won the Derby and the Belmont for trainer Bill Mott. Both horses, though, skipped the Preakness Stakes (G1), the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

The Derby was as thrilling as it gets – Golden Tempo came through with an incredible last-to-first stretch run and held off fellow closer Renegade by a neck.

A few days later, though, any chance of a Triple Crown possibility ended when DeVaux said Golden Tempo would be sent to Keeneland to rest and bypass the Preakness. Renegade, too, was kept out of the Preakness by Pletcher, who rarely runs back a Derby runner two weeks later unless he wins at Churchill Downs.

Napoleon Solo, who did not run in the Derby, came through in the Preakness with a rousing victory, and owner Al Gold decided to pass on the Belmont and run his 3-year-old next in the Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park on July 18.
