Bears Bits: Caleb Williams’ Ridiculous Throw, OTA Highlights, More ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We’re still a little bit away from the 2026 season, but OTAs this week at Halas Hall gave us some quotes and highlights to feel football-y. Like this Caleb Williams throw to Rome Odunze, which made the rounds on Thursday.

Oh yeah, we're SO back ?‍↕️ pic.twitter.com/JGFoGzj6ht

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 28, 2026 If you comment-surfed on that post, you’ll find people trying to diminish the throw. You would also have seen Bears backup quarterback Case Keenum reply with the exact yardage of the throw, which was 67 yards. Sixty-seven air yards is impressive on a traditional drop-back where the quarterback can step up and plant both feet. Actually, really impressive. Do you remember those old QB competitions during the Pro Bowl weekend, where quarterbacks would take a few crow hops and launch the football as far as they could?

— NFL (@NFL) May 23, 2020 To the best of my knowledge, Vinny Testaverde’s 80-yard heave was the longest throw that event produced. Here we have Williams out of the pocket, on the run, chucking the football 67 yards, and drops it into the hands of Rome Odunze over the defense. It’s freakishly good. Of course, the next most popular contrarion commentary was that Williams was out of the pocket on a “7-on-7” drill, which is also incorrect. As CHGO’s Adam Hoge pointed out on Friday, it was an 11-on-11 drill, and the defense was offsides on the play. The tears of NFL North rival fans in the comment sections of Caleb Williams highlight posts could single-handedly restore Lake Mead’s water level deficit. But I digress. Let’s talk about some other fun Halas Hall happenings that have been circulating online this week. We’ll start with Luther Burden III, who was impressive enough to have Bears head coach Ben Johnson raving about his performance, and telling reporters that he’s buying stock in his second-year wide receiver.

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 28, 2026 We chatted a bit about this on Friday’s episode of the BN Bears Podcast, and more specifically, if Burden can become WR1 in Chicago’s offense this season. I think that the WR1 title is going to be less prevalent in this offense than in other offenses around the league, because Johnson likes to spread the ball around, and there’s — at least — three guys (Burden, Loveland, and Odunze) who could wear that crown at any given point. Exciting times we’re living in as Chicago Bears fans. Luis then asked Matt and me who, outside of Burden, we’re buying stock in right now, and my answer was Caleb Williams. We’ve seen the Odunze highlight (at the top), we’ve heard Ben on Burden, we’ve seen some Zavion Thomas highlights, and we’ve even heard Ben say that he feels like the offensive skill players are picking up where they left off. To me, all those points suggest Williams is having a monster third season. We’re talking about a quarterback who played his best football as the 2025 season progressed and made his most impressive plays when the lights were brightest. Now he has the advantage of entering his second season in Johnson’s offense, with largely the same skill players around him, all of whom have the same schematic familiarity advantage. Whatever Caleb Williams’ MVP odds are right now, I’m putting my money on it. Here’s that Zavion Thomas highlight I mentioned:

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) May 29, 2026 Yes, it’s early, but these are fun conversations. In previous years, we spent this portion of the calendar wishcasting, knowing, in the back of our minds, that for those visions to come to fruition, a lot of things would have to go according to the best-case scenario—and even then, they were often unreachable. It feels different now, and regardless of how it shakes out, it’s nice to have a different conversation at this point in the calendar under the current regime at Halas Hall. And before we get into the inevitable “routine play, on-time stuff, completion percentage,” conversation. It’s May. Have fun. The other stuff will come. Ben Johnson will make sure of it, and that’s evident in him, again, making that a point of public emphasis. Here’s another reminder of how much weight the little details hold inside that building:

Bears coach Ben Johnson wants to see Caleb Williams' completion percentage improve. It is a point of emphasis for him. It will be tracked and he will be graded in practice. pic.twitter.com/nWnIUNr7fY

— Adam Jahns (@adamjahns) May 28, 2026 If today’s post felt bullet-y, it’s by design. Like the Bears, we’re getting back to the small details and working on our game plans for the 2026 season. One of our ideas is to roll out a late-afternoon edition of our traditional ‘Bears Bullets.’ So, we’re converting the Bears bits recurring series into the bullet-style formatting that’s been a staple of BN’s coverage and voice for many years. During the season, it’ll be an everyday thing, but we’ll ramp up to that point as the number of things to cover does so throughout the offseason program and training camp. Here’s a good one for your weekend reading list from Gabby Hadjuk at the Bears’ official website to close today’s installment. Happy Friday!
