The college football transfer portal window has been closed for months. But a UCLA quarterback has reportedly decided to enter the portal after two seasons with the program due to a wrinkle in the NCAA rules.
On Thursday, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Karson Gordon, a Texas native and a member of UCLA’s 2024 recruiting class, decided to transfer. Only he won’t be doing so as a football player. Rather, he’ll be in the portal as a track athlete.

And there’s the wrinkle. The 30-day track and field transfer portal window opened on Thursday. College sports attorney Mit Winter made note of this “loophole” on his X account:

For the record, Gordon has a strong track and field background. As a junior in high school, he was named the state of Texas’s track and field athlete of the year after winning the national championship in triple jump. He was also a triple jump silver medalist in the 2024 World Athletics U-20 Championship.
It will be interesting to see what Gordon does next. Per Nakos, he’ll still play football wherever he ends up. His redshirt as a true freshman in 2024 means that he will have three years of eligibility remaining.
