MLBits: Dustin May Loses No-No (and Game), Travis Kelce Buys Stake In Guardians, More ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Cardinals starter Dustin May returned to American Family Field for the first time since suffering a torn UCL on that mound in 2021 and took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Wednesday before losing it (and the game) in a 2-1 Cardinals loss to the Brewers.

Dustin May Nearly Rewrote History in the Place That Changed It

The last time May stood on the mound at American Family Field, his elbow gave out on a single fastball delivery, and his career nearly went with it. That was 2021, when May was one of the more exciting young arms in the Dodgers’ organization.

What followed was Tommy John surgery, 78 innings spread across three years of grinding back, a trade to Boston, and eventually a free agent deal with St. Louis. Wednesday was his first time back on that mound since. He almost made it the best day of his professional life.

On Wednesday, May was masterful in the Cardinals’ 2-1 loss to the Brewers, carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning in one of the most dominant starts of his career. After catcher’s interference put Sal Frelick on base in the third, May retired 15 consecutive batters. The only other Brewer to reach before the eighth was Jake Bauers, who caught a breaking ball off his foot in the second. That was it. For seven-plus innings, May was untouchable on the mound that once took everything from him.

Then Garrett Mitchell got a cutter middle-of-the-plate to lead off the eighth and didn’t miss it.

Luis Rengifo followed with a perfectly placed bunt down the third-base line, runners on the corners with nobody out, and May was done for the night. It unraveled quickly from there. Christian Yelich tied it with a two-out single, and then Masyn Winn fumbled a Jackson Chourio grounder, allowing the game-winning run to score.

Dustin May came that close to a really feel-good story.

Travis Kelce Is Now a Cleveland Guardians Owner

Travis Kelce grew up on the east side of Cleveland, dreaming about playing for the Guardians. He’ll have to settle for owning a piece of them.

The Chiefs tight end was announced Wednesday as a minority investor in Cleveland’s ownership group, a full-circle moment for one of the most prominent Cleveland sports fans in the country. Kelce addressed the move on this week’s edition of New Heights and didn’t hide his excitement.

“This is a way that I can always cement myself back into the east side of Cleveland,” Kelce said. “It’s a dream come true for a Cleveland kid. Any Cleveland kid would be through the roof right now, and I’m happy to be the honorable one to get to do it for us.”

He went further, connecting the investment to something deeper than a business decision.

“These guys gave me the opportunity to show my Cleveland love and plant my roots in Cleveland forever, no matter what,” Kelce said. “It’s an awesome feeling knowing that a childhood kid who grew up on the east side is now part-owner of his favorite baseball team.”

Good for him. Minority ownership stakes in professional sports have become a common landing spot for high-profile athletes looking to plant financial and cultural roots, but Kelce’s connection to Cleveland is genuine and well-documented. This one feels less like a portfolio move and more like a kid from the east side getting to live something out.

Extra Innings

The MLBPA submitted its first proposal to the league today, as the collective bargaining process gets underway. The league is expected to do the same tomorrow. Brett recapped the MLBPA’s initial offer today:

Their corresponding move was signing infielder Nicky Lopez, who was outrighted by the Cubs this week (but elected free agency). The Tulsa Drillers have suspended their bat dog program after Dodgers’ prospect Kendall George was injured this week trying to avoid a bat dog on his way back to the dugout.
