Bubba Chandler isn’t quite having the same level of success as Braxton Ashcraft, but he’s still out there throwing 98.6 MPH. So. You know. Good luck!
One other note: Chandler’s career splits are closer to neutral, but this season, lefties are KILLING him relative to righties (.352 wOBA vs .297 wOBA). Which kind of makes me surprised the Cubs didn’t get Michael Conforto in there.

Chicago Cubs: Jameson Taillon, RHP
Jameson Taillon’s last start featured FOUR fewer home runs than the start before that, so … progress! Unfortunately, he also allowed four earned runs on eight hits and a walk against just five strikeouts. That’s just who he is this year. He is never likely to go out and dominate, but he can probably throw 100 pitches, regardless of what happens.
His last good start was closer to the beginning of May, when he held the Rangers to just 1 earned run on 4 hits, two walks, and four strikeouts over 5.1 IP in Arlington.
He faced this very Pirates team earlier in the year, and it didn’t go well: 6.0 IP, 6H, 2BB … but also he struck out 10 in that one and kept the Cubs in the game long enough to come back and win in extra innings.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Bubba Chandler, RHP
Bubba Chandler has made ten starts this season, and only one of them have qualified as a “quality start.” That said, the next closest game was against the Cubs, when he came just two outs shy of his second: 5.1 IP, 5H, 3ER, 2BB, 4K.
Of course, that’s when the team still knew how to hit (Swanson and Ballesteros both went deep).
And while Chandler has given up more than his fair share of runs, he did just strike out 11 Rays over 5.0 innings of work his last time out, with no earned runs over on just two hits and three walks. But for the most part, he’s just not in final form yet. The walk rate, in particular, is egregiously high: 16.0%.
So if the Cubs do want to succeed tonight, they should probably lean on the patience that served them well to start the year.
