The World at Our Doorstep

A perspective from Roderic Mullen

On May 28, Glenwood Elementary School will celebrate its annual Culture Night, sponsored by the PTA. While Glenwood has for several years been a magnet school, with focus on Mandarin – English dual language, world language, and STEAM2, Glenwood’s culture night is about celebrating more than just a Sino-American connection.

It’s a chance for children and parents from the many different countries that make up Glenwood to enjoy a taste of one another’s lives and cultures. Food, crafts, and games have featured prominently every year. In the past countries represented have included Belgium, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Brazil, China, Jamaica, the United States, and many more. It is truly “the world at your doorstep.”

These days, because of budgetary pressures, Glenwood is one of three elementary schools being considered for closure by the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools. It would be a significant loss to the community to have such a vibrant school closed or to have its unique blend of programs divided up among other schools.

While school officials and school board members are rightly concerned about both budget and enrollment figures, the latest projections are that the CHCCS school system, and most particularly its elementary schools, will maintain or even increase enrollment over the next five to ten years.

In light of the recent projections, wouldn’t the wisest course be to even out enrollment among our elementary schools in other ways than by closing one of our schools? I believe it would.
