BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Brockport Golden Eagles football team is 7-1 this season, led by quarterback Zymier Jackson and running back Derrion Battle.

Me and him now grown up together, basically my cousin. So it’s not I feel like when I’m out there, you know, like, it’s easy and it’s fun because, like, I’m playing with my family,” Battle said.
“My first year ever playing football was actually with Derrion, flag football, five years old, [we’re] 20 now. And we’ve just been connected ever since,” Jackson said.
Their football journeys began together with Battle’s dad as their coach. “He instilled a lot of confidence in me. He allowed me to, you know, kind of get that little push forward to continue playing football later on in my life,” Jackson said.
Both continued playing football at Section Five high schools, with Jackson at East and Battle at Aquinas. “My last game of my senior year, I played probably about 3 or 4, 4 or 5 stars. And, so it’s just prepare me for, you know, how fast cars are going to be and how real people are going to play in college,” Battle said.
Now, they are teammates again at Brockport. “It just helps to know that the guy next to me on every snap is someone who I’ve known for forever, and I trust him, and I know he’s got me. He’s a dude. He can ball and he makes plays for us,” Jackson said.
Battle has rushed for 676 yards and scored seven touchdowns in eight games this season while splitting carries. Jackson was named the starting quarterback three games into the season.
Even with their teamwork, competition remains a key part of their relationship. “Even before games, we gotta have a better game. When we were younger, playing video games, just everything is a competition,” Battle said.
The Golden Eagles will face No. 10-ranked Cortland at noon on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Brockport. “We come in and play football and get to showcase versus a highly ranked and highly good opponent that we can compete, we can hang with these guys,” Battle said.
“It’s like just unreal feeling every day coming to the locker room. He’s right next to me,” Jackson said.
The game will be a chance for both players to continue their journey together on the field.
