Targeting a player in trade has its pros and cons, largely related to the price tag, the performance projections, and the fit on your roster. But a lesser-discussed issue – because we don’t always have REAL visibility to it – is the question of just how happy or unhappy the player might be to land in your clubhouse. I expect front offices do try to suss out that kind of thing before pulling the trigger on a massive trade, but you rarely know for sure that you’re going to get total buy-in from a player who didn’t come up through your organization or choose to sign there.
Turns out, there was no such question when the Cubs traded for Dexter Fowler ahead of the 2015 season.
Not only was Fowler a perfect fit for the Cubs in center field and atop their young lineup, he was a model teammate and clubhouse influence. And the Cubs already had good reason to know he would welcome a trade.
Here’s the story Dexter Fowler told on the Lovable Reunion Podcast:
Dexter Fowler was in the minors on a rehab assignment, played against the Iowa Cubs, and new Chicago had something special cooking.“They’re going to be nasty. … I NEED to be there.” ? pic.twitter.com/yyWgD3irmm
— Lovable Reunion (@LovableReunion) May 19, 2026Thanks to his connection in Houston with future Cubs hitting coach John Mallee (he was hired by the Cubs just a few months before the trade), Dexter Fowler felt comfortable enough letting it be known (1) he could see what was coming for that group of Cubs, and (2) “bro, I need to be over there with you!”
Now, what Fowler says he had in mind was that, in a year, he was going to be a free agent, and that’s where he wanted to land. We don’t have to call this a tampering situation or whatever. But, hey, how could it NOT have gotten back to the front office that, if they were to target Dexter Fowler in trade, he would be extremely happy to impact that 2015 Cubs team? And moreover, that he might be open to re-signing after the season, which he ultimately did in his famous Spring Training return?
I love hearing about this after the fact, especially given how important Fowler became to those two Cubs teams, to Cubs fans, and to the Cubs organization.
