Stressed About the Cubs? Try Yoga … Or Look at the Extreme Soft Spot in the Upcoming Schedule ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It’s been a weird year for the Chicago Cubs.

They began the season floating at or below .500 for a little bit longer than anyone would like. Then they rattled off a 20-3 stretch, including two ten-game winning streaks, and now they’re on the doorstep of dropping their fourth straight series, including back-to-back sets against the White Sox and Brewers, which just makes it sting that extra little bit.

Oh, and they lost Cade Horton for all of this year (and most of next), Matthew Boyd is already on his second IL stint, and Justin Steele should be returning sometime next week, but now it’s looking more like the All-Star break, at best.

Despite all that, the Cubs are still 10-games over .500 and in first place of the NL Central (for now), with an almost identical record to the Padres and Dodgers. So maybe … chill. It’s sucked lately — and they’ll definitely need to do something big at the deadline — but they’ll be okay. Probably.

And if that’s not doing it for you, allow me to point out a legitimate sweet spot in the Cubs upcoming schedule, during which they should really be able to make some noise. It doesn’t start right away, but I’ll list out the entire next month for a little bit of reference.

Brewers (2 more at home) OFF DAY Astros – 3 games, home Pirates – 4 games, road Cardinals – 3 games, road OFF DAY Athletics – 3 games, home Giants – 3 games, home OFF DAY Rockies – 3 games, road Giants – 3 games, road Rockies – 3 games, home OFF DAY Blue Jays – 3 games, home Mets – 4 games, road

You can decide for yourself if the 7 straight road games against the Pirates (24-23) and Cardinals (27-19) make you optimistic or not, but that’s not the stretch I’m talking about. Plus, those games are capped by the Athletics (… first place, but below .500 as of today) and the underperforming Astros (19-30). So overall, that simply cannot be considered a tough stretch.

In any case, it’s what comes after that that has my attention.

Starting on June 6, the Chicago Cubs will play 12-straight games against the San Francisco Giants (20-28) and Colorado Rockies (19-29). That includes not one, but two off-days plus half of the games at home. THAT is the stretch in which you rattle off 8 or 9 wins and start feeling better about yourself as the All-Star break approaches.

And just for good measure, after those 12 games, the Cubs face the Blue Jays and Mets, both of whom, at 21-26, have been wildly underperforming all season.

That is 18-straight winnable games against bad teams. 21 straight if you include the Athletics.

So, yes, things may feel a little fraught at the moment, but there’s a giant light at the end of this tunnel, and it’s not too far away. The Cubs will be fine. It may be a little bumpy, and they might not be as obviously good as we briefly hoped/thought they might be, but I still like them for the division.

Of course, immediately after that stretch, they play the Brewers in Milwaukee and the Padres at home … but let’s just take it 21 games at a time.
