For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
New York high school state runner-up Kayra Patan has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Northeastern University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am so excited and grateful to announce my commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Northeastern University! Thank you to my family, teammates, and coaches for all of their support, and a special thank you to Coach Roy and Coach Bryce for giving me this opportunity! GO HUSKIES!!!
A junior at Herricks High School in New York, Patan began competing for the school’s swimming and diving team during her sophomore year. She also currently trains year-round with Long Island Aquatic Club, where she primarily specializes in breaststroke and IM.
Patan is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw her drop over two and a half seconds in both the 200 IM and 200 breast. Her first major meet was the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Championships in November, a meet she has competed at each year of her high school career. She finished second in the 100 breast (1:03.68) and 12th in the 200 IM (2:07.86), and helped the 200 medley relay (28.92 breast split) take eighth and the 200 free relay (26.00 split) place 30th.
Patan’s best meet of the season was arguably the TYR Senior Metropolitan Winter Championships in February, where she clocked her current PBs in the 200 breast and 200 IM and a season best in the 100 breast. She helped Long Island sweep the medley relays with breast splits of 29.43 and 1:02.55, and individually placed fourth in the 100 breast (1:03.27), ninth in the 200 breast (2:19.33), 18th in the 200 IM (2:05.98), and 31st in the 100 fly (58.52).
Patan boasts a 100 breast best of 1:03.00 from a Sectionals meet in November 2024.
Top SCY Times:
100 Breaststroke: 1:03.00 200 Breaststroke: 2:19.33 200 IM: 2:05.98A Division I program, Northeastern competes in the Coastal Athletic Association, with the women’s team placing fourth out of eight teams at this past season’s conference championships. Based on those results, Patan’s lifetime bests would have placed fifth in the 100 breast and landed in the ‘B’ final of both the 200 breast and 200 IM, giving her a chance to be an immediate contributor for the Huskies.
Patan joins freestyle and backstroke specialists Myra Li and Lola Frey as the only publicized commits in the Huskies’ class of 2031 so far.
