Jonah Coleman likely to be Denver Broncos most-impactful rookie in 2026 ...Middle East

Running back Jonah Coleman is likely to be the Denver Broncos most-impactful rookie in 2026.

Why?

The Broncos were deficient at running back last year, he’s a solid protector, and knows how to break tackles with toughness.

Jonah Coleman is likely to be the Denver Broncos biggest rookie

Coleman, the running back out of Washington, looks to have a big impact on the Broncos 2026 season.

Yes, Denver re-signed J.K. Dobbins and last year they drafted RJ Harvey. Dobbins was surprisingly efficient and effective last year before getting injured in Week 10. Similarly, Harvey was explosive and showed off his great hands in the passing game; he was especially good gaining yards as a complimentary back to Dobbins.

But when Dobbins went down, Harvey struggled a bit and the Broncos running game all but evaporated.

Denver desperately needed to upgrade the running back room. They tried to replace Dobbins with David Montgomery and then Travis Etienne. When neither worked out, they fell back on Dobbins.

So, after whiffing in free agency, the Broncos knew they still needed to add to the running back room and did with Jonah Coleman in the fourth round.

He was Denver’s second-highest pick of the 2026 draft, and he started showing off at rookie mini-camp on Monday.

Coleman has first practice with the Broncos

When you’re thinking about Coleman backing up J.K. Dobbins and possibly filling in for him, it would be good if the two were similar backs.

And for the most part, they are.

Dobbins is a tough-nosed back, coming in at 5’10” and 212 pounds. He has the power to push through the line, but enough speed to break bigger runs. Meanwhile, Coleman is 5’8″ and 220 pounds, with less speed but more power than Dobbins.

Back when the NFL Draft took place, the Broncos front office compared Coleman to Dobbins; but was a lot of it hype?

On one hand, Denver very much needed a tougher back to take the ball through the tackles. Not just if Dobbins is injured, but to spell Dobbins during the season and possibly extend the veteran’s playing time this year.

On the other hand, we shouldn’t discount Dobbins’ speed, which is something Coleman doesn’t have quite as much of.

What what Coleman does have is the ability to pick up pass rushes. That’s crucial for a rookie to get on the field, and something that RJ Harvey has struggled with in the NFL.

“I did a lot of pass pro a lot in college, but I’m not in college anymore,” Coleman said to reporters on Monday per Jeff Legwold of ESPN. “This is the NFL; this is a lot of guys who’ve been playing football a long time.”

Coleman’s coming in with the right attitude. He’s confident but not cocky and knows he will be facing some of the most talented pass rushers in the world.

Obviously, pass protection is huge for any running back, not just rookies.

But Coleman is likely to make an impact running the ball too, depending on how much Sean Payton and Davis Webb want to use him in that role.

Payton isn’t huge on playing rookies, and there’s still Jaleel McLaughlin on the roster, too. However, McLaughlin is a smaller, scat back like Harvey; it’s like Denver has a 1a and 1b of big backs (Dobbins and Coleman) as well as fast backs (Harvey and McLaughlin).

As the offseason training programs move forward, Jonah Coleman will have time to prove to Denver Broncos coaches he needs to be on the field. We’re likely to see him a good deal in preseason as the team figures out what he can contribute in 2026.
