David Coulthard believes Kimi Antonelli’s rapid rise to the top of the Formula 1 world championship will depend as much on the people around him as on his pace on track, with the former F1 driver pointing to the young Italian’s family and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff as key figures in keeping him grounded.
At just 19, Kimi Antonelli has stunned the paddock with a sensational start to his sophomore season in the sport, taking victories in China, Japan and Miami to move into an early championship lead.
With teammate George Russell close behind in the standings, the internal Mercedes battle is already shaping into one of the defining narratives of the year.
But for Coulthard, the fight for a title is not only about extracting performance from the car – it’s also about managing everything that comes with suddenly being the hunted.
The weight of sudden fame
Antonelli’s rise has brought with it an intensity that extends far beyond the circuit. Coulthard warned that the early excitement surrounding success can quickly shift into something far more intrusive.
“Well, it's all new and exciting to them right now, but they will soon get fed up of people coming to the door,” he explained of the attention Antonelli is getting during an episode of the Up To Speed podcast.
It is a familiar cycle in Formula 1: rapid success, rapid scrutiny, and a private life that begins to shrink under public attention.

Coulthard pointed to history as evidence that even the brightest starts come with unexpected pressures.
“We saw it at the beginning of Charles Leclerc's career when the success started to come. He was having people ring his doorbell in Monaco because it's a small place and there's nothing to stop someone ringing a doorbell,” the Scot added.
Wolff and family at the centre of the storm
For Coulthard, the deciding factor in whether Antonelli’s momentum translates into a sustained title challenge will be the support system surrounding him – particularly at Mercedes and at home.
“They will be dealing with all of this change, all of this expectation, and how Toto [Wolff] manages that, how Kimi's father and mother manage that will determine, let's say, how they can help support Kimi to be what he is right now, which is an undistracted racing driver.”
It is a delicate balancing act for Toto Wolff, whose reputation has been built on managing elite drivers under extreme pressure. But Coulthard’s emphasis goes beyond team structure – it extends into the emotional infrastructure of Antonelli’s private life.
The implication is clear: raw speed may have put Antonelli in the title fight, but stability off-track may decide whether he stays there.
A talent that will only grow stronger
While Antonelli continues to defy expectations, not everyone believes his current form defines his ceiling. Former team boss Otmar Szafnauer has suggested the Italian will grow significantly stronger in the coming years as experience and maturity develop.
“I think he's great and has got the potential to be world-class in time," he said, speaking on the High Performance Podcast.
"He's a teenager and with time, physiologically, he's going to get mentally stronger because all the different compartments and areas of your brain connect.

“Now George is a great driver, and he too can become world champion. But Kimi, younger, less experienced, is a great driver."
For now, Antonelli’s challenge is immediate. He is not just defending a championship lead – he is learning how to live inside one.
And as Coulthard’s comments underline, the real test may not come under the lights of Sunday night, but in everything that happens once the helmet comes off.
