For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Iowa high school state runner-up Jaya Stacy has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of South Dakota beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to University of South Dakota! I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for supporting me through the process and helping me get to where I am today. A special thank you to Coach Anthony, Coach Jason and the rest of the USD coaching staff for offering this amazing opportunity! GO YOTES!
A junior at Bettendorf High School, Stacy has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming and diving team since her freshman year. She also swims year-round with the Iowa Flyers Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in breaststroke.
Stacy is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw her drop six seconds in the 200 breast and two and a half seconds in the 100 breast, with the first of those drops coming at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) State Championships in November. She finished runner-up in the 100 breast with a then-PB of 1:03.72 and touched fifth in the 50 free with her season-best of 23.90, a tick off her best-ever mark of 23.88 from the IGHSAU Regional Meet in November 2023.
Stacy also helped Bettendorf grab silver in the 200 free relay (24.17 leadoff) and bronze in the 200 medley relay (28.82 breast split). It was her first time cracking the top five individually, though she did appear on the winning 200 and 400 free relays in her sophomore year.
Stacy wrapped up the 2025-26 short course season at the Iowa Short Course Championships at the end of March with her strongest performances at the meet to date. She finished as the runner-up in both breaststroke events, clocking PBs of 1:02.61 and 2:22.96, and made the top-ten in the 50 free, taking 10th in 23.97. She also played a part in four relays finishing in the top seven: 400 medley relay (second, 1:03.91 breast split), 200 free relay (third, 23.82 split), 200 medley relay (fourth, 29.12 breast split), and 400 free relay (seventh, 53.27 leadoff).
Top SCY Times:
100 Breaststroke: 1:02.61 200 Breaststroke: 2:22.96 50 Freestyle: 23.88A Division I program, South Dakota competes in the Summit League, with the women’s team placing second out of seven teams at this past season’s conference championships. Stacy’s current lifetime bests would have finished fifth in the 100 breast and 14th in the 50 free and 200 breast, meaning she will likely be an immediate contributor for the Yotes (and she still has two seasons to continue dropping before her first conference meet).
With several recruiting classes still to be finalized before she arrives on campus, plus graduations and potential transfers, it is far too early to project the team’s depth chart and conference outlook for the 2027-28 season.
Stacy joins sprint freestylers Avery Schueller and Abby Wright in committing to the Yotes’ class of 2031 so far.
