Winds, blowing dust, storms: What to expect in Illinois with severe weather possible ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Across Illinois Tuesday, a variety of weather conditions will likely be seen in a matter of hours.

But where you live will likely determine what exactly you see.

According to the National Weather Service, everything from dust storms to damaging winds to potentially strong thunderstorms could be seen.

The Chicago area is under a “marginal” risk for severe weather, a level one out of five.

Here’s a look at what to expect and when:

Tuesday afternoon

By about 12 p.m., some rain may develop off to the north, though storms weren’t expected to move in until later in the afternoon.

A blowing dust advisory is in effect for some counties, including LaSalle, Grundy, Kankakee and southern Will in Illinois, and Jasper and Newton counties in northwest Indiana.

The advisory warns of “patchy blowing dust with localized visibility of one mile or less expected” near agricultural areas.

“Localized visibility reductions to < 1 mile will be possible, primarily in rural areas south of I-80,” the NWS wrote on X.

Winds are expected to rise around 3-4 p..m., reaching close to 40 mph, according to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes.

“We have very dry air at the surface so a lot of the rain will be evaporating before reaching the ground this afternoon. That evaporation cools the air, which causes it to sink faster, so we could have some gusts over 40 mph even without much rain,” Jeanes said.

Around the same time, scattered rain showers will be on the rise across the region.

Temperature highs Tuesday will be slightly warmer, with a high of 75 degrees as storms move in ahead of a cold front.

Tuesday evening

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the greatest likelihood of strong to severe storms comes between 4 and 10 p.m., “when we may have a few storms with strong enough wind gusts to be severe.”

“The primary threat will be damaging gusts over 60 mph. The risk of damaging hail or a tornado are extremely low,” Jeanes said.

The blowing dust advisory will come to an end at 7 p.m. CT as winds gradually decrease.

Overnight and into Wednesday morning

By Wednesday, temperatures will drop to the low 60s with breezy conditions.

Temperatures in the 70s return by the end of the week, with 80s into the weekend, along with off-and-on storm chances.
