Jeremiyah Love determined to give Cardinals a return on their investment ...Middle East

TEMPE — Arizona Cardinals rookie running back Jeremiyah Love is a solid 2-for-2 when it comes to quoting Spider-Man and Uncle Ben at his press conferences.

This time around, though, he put his own spin on it following the first day of on-field work for Cardinals rookie minicamp.

Fresh off signing his rookie contract, which pays the running back $53 million (largest in total value at present for his position) fully guaranteed as the No. 3 overall pick, Love is determined to live up to his price tag.

“Spider-Man said, ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ In this instance with a lot of money comes a lot of trust, a lot of responsibility,” Love said. “With them putting that much trust in me, I think I have a duty to give them a return on their investment. They’re investing in me as a player, they picked a running back as the third pick in the NFL Draft, which hasn’t happened for a long time.

“So, with that great power comes a great responsibility. I’m going to make sure that I do right by them and do right by myself. … I hold myself to a certain standard. I’m coming into this league, ready to compete, ready to dominate and do what I got to do to make this organization look good and make myself look good.”

Love took small steps toward achieving that goal with Friday’s rookie minicamp alongside 15 others. For the rookie class, it’s the first physical introduction to the next level. It’s a lot more real now.

Were there helmets or pads? Any 11-on-11 work? No, but it’s a taste of what he and the rest of the rookies can expect as organized team activities, mandatory minicamp and training camp come knocking.

And it didn’t take long for Love to look right at home while flashing his shiftiness during the open portion of camp.

“It was great. Getting my cleats on the field, getting some nice work in, getting to see how everybody moves, how every coach operates, getting to see how (running backs coach Matt Merritt) operates,” Love said. “I feel like this is my new home. I’m just getting acclimated, getting to know the guys, getting to know the field, getting to know coaches more.”

Among those guys Love is getting to know is rookie quarterback Carson Beck, who got reps in with the running back for a good portion of Friday’s work.

They make up a duo who may very well be in the starting lineup together this season — and potentially beyond.

“It’s an honor to work with him. I got the honor to play against him as well,” Love said. “Just being able to be on the same team with him is great. I got to see what type of athlete he is. … He’s a great athlete, great person. As a teammate, I just look forward to getting to know him more.

“I just got here yesterday, so still getting to know the guys more. Initial thoughts and initial just looks on guys, they’re all great guys, all outstanding people. I’m very excited to continue to work with them and to just build better relationships with them.”
