Here are recaps from the early Derby Day undercard graded stakes, including the Pat Day Mile, the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile, the Twin Spires Turf Sprint, and the Derby City Distaff:
Pat Day Mile: Baffert wins with Crude Velocity (Race 8)
Crude Velocity ($5.14) came through with a winning stretch run, nailing pace-setter Englishman in deep stretch to win the $750,000 Pat Day Mile (G2) in stakes record time.
The 3-year-old colt trained by Bob Baffert improved to 3-0, Baffert hedged on whether Crude Velocity would run next in the Preakness Stakes (G1), the second leg of the Triple Crown, in two weeks.
“This horse is a freaky horse. He is so talented,’’ Baffert said. “I was very surprised that he was able to win first out with all of the trouble he got in. If he stays healthy, we’ll be hearing from this horse down the road.”
Crude Velocity (the 3-2 favorite) started slowly but worked his way back into contention under Florent Geroux. Into the stretch, he came up to Englishman (8-5) and passed him in the final strides.
Winning time was 1:33.87 —
Classic Q holds on to win Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (Race 7)
With 2-1 favorite Portfolio Duration closing in on, Classic Q ($15.62) hung on in the stretch for a neck victory in the $1 million Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (G1).
Ridden by John Velazquez and trained by Mark Casse, the 4-year-old gray filly won for the first time in three starts in 2026 and improved her career record to 14-4-3-1. Classic Q took over from pace-setter Italian Soiree around the far turn, opened a two-length lead, and held on for the win.
Pin Up Betty was third as the second betting choice at 4-1. Winning time was 1:34.71 over a firm turf course.
“It’s so rewarding. She’s run so hard so many times,’’ Casse said. “I’m so grateful we’re able to get the job done in this race. She likes it here. She really likes the shorter turns.”
Yellow Card scores in Twins Spires Turf Sprint (Race 5)
With a final surge between horses in the final strides, Yellow Card ($7.80) edged Joe Shiesty by a neck, with favorite Litigation another neck back, and won the $600,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint (G2) for 3-year-olds and up.
Yellow Card, trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Flavien Prat, covered the 5 ½ furlongs in 1:02.20 over a firm turf course.
The 5-year-old Yellow Card topped $1 million in earnings with the victory as he improved to 14-5-4-1 with his first stakes score.
“He really showed a lot of courage. The whole race was a battle, and he fought to get to the wire first,’’ Prat said.

In the opening graded stakes race on the Derby card, R Disaster ($16.26) led from the start over even-money favorite Splendora, then fended off Ways and Means for a 2 1/4-length win in the $923,000 Derby City Distaff (G1).
R Disaster, trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr. and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, topped $1 million in earnings with the victory, the 5-year-old mare’s ninth in 16 starts. Usha was third, followed by Splendora and Autumn Evening.
