May is off to chilly start, with frost advisories and freeze warnings going into effect and below-average temperatures as the month kicks off.
The average high temperature for May 1, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, was 65 degrees. Friday will be a far cry from that, with a high of 50 degrees expected with 40s along the lake, Roman said.
Friday also started out rainy for some, with live Doppler 5 Radar showing scattered showers and areas of drizzle moving across Central Cook County ahead of sunrise.
Mostly cloudy skies will continue into the afternoon, Roman said, with more spotty showers possible for some. Temperatures Friday night will drop down into the 30s, making for cold conditions across northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.
Overnight, a frost advisory will go into effect for nearly all counties in the Chicago area, except Central Cook. The advisory will remain in effect through 8 a.m. Saturday.
“Frost will be most widespread across portions of interior northern Illinois and northwest Indiana,” the National Weather Service said.
In northern LaPorte county, a freeze watch will go into effect, with temperatures as low as 28 degrees possible.
Temperatures Saturday will remain in the 50s, Roman said, with a gradual increase starting Sunday as temperatures rise into the 60s.
The next best chance for rain, Roman said, comes Monday, with highs into the 70s.

Cloudy skies early Friday morning were blocking the chance to see the full “Flower” moon, Roman said, though it will be visible through Saturday.
“Even though you can’t see it right now, you’ll be able to see it tonight because the clouds will clear,” Roman said, with the moonrise at 8:16 p.m. Friday “It’s called the full “Flower” moon because of the arrival of Spring. Everything is in bloom.”
The next full moon, Roman said, will be the full “Blue” moon on May 31.
“‘Blue’ moon is the term for the second full moon in a calendar month,” Roman said.
