CUBS LINEUP — This afternoon, the Chicago Cubs are looking to complete their first series sweep of the season, while extending their winning streak to five. Given that everyone else in the NL Central keeps on winning, that would be nice.
If the weather permits (rain in the area), Javier Assad will start for the Cubs, and Tobias Myers (not the originally scheduled David Peterson) will start for the Mets. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the finale at Wrigley Field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Nico Hoerner, 2B Michael Busch, 1B Alex Bregman, 3B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Moises Ballesteros, DH Carson Kelly, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SSThere’s nothing unusual or particularly interesting about the Cubs lineup today. The only change of note is yesterday’s hero, Carson Kelly, stepping in behind the plate for Miguel Amaya. Other than that, Seiya Suzuki is still in right field, and with a righty on the mound for New York, Matt Shaw is on the bench.
Of course, as we’ve seen, if the Mets bring in a lefty to face Ballesteros, Shaw will likely enter the game.
New York Mets Lineup:
Carson Benge, LF Bo Bichette, 3B Francisco Lindor, SS Luis Robert Jr., CF MJ Melendez, DH Mark Vientos, 1B Brett Baty, RF Marcus Semien, 2B Luis Torrens, CPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Javier Assad, RHP
Javier Assad’s first start in the big leagues this season was almost comically consistent the rest of his Cubs career. That is to say, good: 5.2 IP, 1H, 0ER 2BB, 3K. As soon as he walked off the mound, we were counting our blessings to have him given the injuries to Justin Steele, Cade Horton, and Matthew Boyd.
But then his second start … no so good.
Although Assad was kept on the field to wear a lot more of these runs than he would have if the pitching staff was healthy and rested, the damage was done against him nonetheless: 4.1 IP, 11H, 9ER, 2BB, 3K.
With that said, Assad is good more often than not and the (Juan Soto-less) Mets are just a brutal offense vs RHP right now. So he’s in a good position to succeed.
New York Mets: Tobias Myers, RHP
The Mets swapped out today’s scheduled starter, David Peterson, for Tobias Myers, but not because of injury or anything like that. They’re just trying to stop the bleeding of the ten-game losing streak. Peterson, an All-Star last season, has an 8.79 ERA over his last three starts. He’ll be available out of the bullpen.
As for Tobias Myers, he’s the other guy who came over to the Mets along with Freddy Peralta this offseason. So far, Myers has appeared exclusively out of the pen for the Mets (all multi-inning outings), though he made six starts last season and 25 the year before that. He’s a pretty solid swing guy/long man. Traditional lefty/righty splits, too, though they’re not that dramatic.
