The International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) has announced its 2027 class of inductees, including several Olympic gold medalists, world champions, and legendary figures in and around the water.
The class is made up of 12 inductees: Allison Schmitt, Federica Pellegrini, Pernille Blume, Mireia Belmonte Garcia, Kosuke Hagino, Thomas Lurz (open water), Orlando Duque (high diving), Debbie Handley (water polo), Svetlana Romashina (artistic swimming), Jack Bauerle (coach), Paul Beulque (pioneer), and Daniel Dias (paralympic swimming).
Honorees will be celebrated on April 10, 2027, at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Schmitt is a four-time Olympian who collected 10 Olympic medals, including four golds, as well as 25 World Championship medals, 13 of which were gold. Schmitt was a key international swimmer for the US for most of two decades and has since become an advocate for mental health.
Pellegrini was selected for the ISHOF in 2025 but will be officially honored in 2027. Pellegrini made history as the first swimmer to win eight medals in a row in the same event at the World Championships, doing so in the 200 free. Pellegrini was also a five-time Olympian, making her the second swimmer in history, behind Michael Phelps, to qualify for the same event at five Olympics.
Blume, a three-time Olympian for Denmark, won the 50 free at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, marking the nation’s first swimming gold at the games in 68 years. After retiring from the sport in 2022 at age 28, she was appointed to the World Aquatics Bureau.
Belmonte Garcia is another three-time Olympian who won four medals over three Olympics, including gold in the 200 fly at the Rio Olympics in 2016. The Spanish champion also boasts a career that includes eight world championship titles and 92 total medals in World Aquatics competitions.
Hagino is a four-time Olympic medalist, winning gold in 2016 in the 400 IM, the first Japanese gold medal ever won in the event at the Olympics. In addition to his Olympic success, he also won three long course World Championship silvers, a short course world title in the 200 IM in 2014, and another silver at those short course worlds in the 400 IM.
Svetlana Romashina is one of the most accomplished artistic swimmers in history, winning seven Olympic gold medals, and won 42 golds and three silvers in World Aquatics competition, never finishing lower than silver.
Jack Bauerle, who spent 43 years at the helm at the University of Georgia, won seven NCAA Women’s Coach of the Year honors, 14 SEC Women’s Coach of the Year awards, and two SEC Men’s Coach of the Year nods. Bauerle also served on three US Olympic team staffs (2000, 2008, and 2020).
Orlando Duque is the first High Diver inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Nicknamed ‘The Duke’, he is a 13-time world champion high diver and was the first World Aquatics High Diving Champion in 2013.
Debbie Handley was a member of the first Australian women’s international water polo team in 1976, and helped win gold for her country at the 1986 World Championships, which marked the first official world championships for women’s water polo.
Thomas Lurz was a three-time Olympian in Open Water for Germany, as well as a 15-time World Champion and three-time European Champion.
Daniel Dias was a four-time Brazilian Paralympian who won 27 Paralympic medals, 14 of them gold. His international career medal total sits at 100, 78 of them gold.
Paul Beulque was a French swimming and Water Polo Coach who helped lead the French to a team Olympic gold in 1924. He is also credited with helping develop the modern athlete development system, which combined education, scientific coaching, and standardized swimming instruction.
